His daughter Nina captured the combination of stage life and everyday pleasures in a tribute quoted by NME: “My dad was a rock star. Literally. A member of Sha Na Na for over 50 years. He loved early morning diners and late nights onstage.”
His place in Sha Na Na’s history
Two of Sha Na Na’s best-known public milestones came before Simon’s later work on Grease. The group performed at Woodstock in 1969, then appeared in the 1978 film as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers. Those appearances put the band’s nostalgic rock ’n’ roll sound before audiences far beyond its concert following.

What did Scott Simon contribute to Grease?
Simon co-wrote “Sandy” with Louis St. Louis for the film. John Travolta sings the song as Danny Zuko, expressing his longing for Sandy. The credit connects Simon’s work as a songwriter to one of the film’s memorable musical moments, alongside his decades performing with Sha Na Na.

No. The musician was Screamin’ Scott Simon of Sha Na Na. NPR commentator Scott Simon was a different person. He said he knew the musician and wrote about a newspaper mix-up after the death: the Buffalo News obituary mistakenly ran a photograph of the NPR host. As NPR’s Scott Simon put it, “However, the newspaper ran a photo of me.”
