Absolute Batman is a new interpretation of Bruce Wayne in a separate DC continuity—not a replacement for the core Batman series. It is one part of DC All In, an initiative that keeps the main DC Universe running while introducing a line of reimagined heroes. For writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, the shift changes Batman’s place in Gotham’s power structure while preserving traits Snyder considers central to the character.
How DC All In connects two continuities
DC All In is the broader initiative; the Absolute Universe is its distinct line of ongoing series. DC framed the 64-page DC All In Special #1, co-written by Snyder and Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig, as the launch context for the Absolute Universe and a jumping-on point for new and returning readers. Snyder called All In “a line-wide jumping-on point.” DC’s All In announcement sets out that purpose.

The two lines offer different approaches, not a contest in which one replaces the other. In the main DC Universe, new creative teams and fresh arcs provide entry points without a reboot or retcon. The Absolute Universe, by contrast, reimagines familiar heroes in a separate continuity. DC’s All In hub lists Absolute Batman, by Snyder and Dragotta, alongside Absolute Superman by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval and Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. The hub notes that the line expanded in 2025 with Absolute Flash, Absolute Martian Manhunter and Absolute Green Lantern.
What makes this Batman different?
A new social position for Bruce Wayne
In the Absolute continuity, Bruce is young, an engineer and without the generational wealth usually associated with him. DC’s September 2024 preview presents him as someone who wants to fix problems in his city. That changes the familiar premise: rather than beginning with a billionaire operating from a position of immense private resources, this Bruce is an outsider confronting established power. DC’s first look at Absolute Batman #1 introduces that version of Bruce.

Alfred has a different history, too
Alfred is recast as a grizzled former MI6 agent and mercenary, a background that may put him at odds with Batman. The change gives the familiar relationship a new source of tension rather than simply carrying over the usual caretaker-and-mentor arrangement.
What Snyder says stays true
For Snyder, reinvention does not mean discarding the character’s foundation. He described the Absolute line’s guiding idea as: “The mission statement was we want these characters to remain true to core, but they’re happening now.” In a DC interview published for the series launch, he discussed bringing the heroes into the present. GamesRadar’s interview with Snyder further describes his social inversion: this Batman is a disruptive outsider facing powerful adversaries and established systems. Snyder identifies idealism and not killing as core traits that remain.

That contrast is the central creative question of the series: what does Batman’s idealism look like when Bruce lacks the conventional wealth and status associated with the role? The premise changes his resources and position, but Snyder’s stated principles give the character a recognizable moral center.
How Snyder and Dragotta build the series together
The reinvention is also visual. In an AIPT conversation, Snyder and Dragotta discuss their collaboration and how the costume should serve both the story and the character. Their work extends beyond the central design: at New York Comic Con in October 2024, they previewed their debut arc, “The Zoo,” and discussed the Absolute Batmobile, according to DC’s panel recap. Those details point to shared world-building without requiring the series to abandon its character-first premise.
Where the series begins
DC announced Absolute Batman #1 for October 9, 2024, with Snyder writing and Dragotta drawing; DC’s launch interview also credits Frank Martin. The issue was announced as available in print and digital at launch. Those historical launch details do not establish current stock, price or storefront availability.
For readers choosing between the two starting points, the distinction is straightforward: DC All In Special #1 supplies the initiative’s broader opening context, while Absolute Batman #1 begins Snyder and Dragotta’s particular series. The sources do not establish a required reading order.
