Scott Porter Shares Personal Reason for Fighting Huntington’s Disease

Scott Porter’s fight against Huntington’s disease is rooted in his family: his mother-in-law is symptomatic and his wife, Kelsey Mayfield, was reported gene-positive. The couple used IVF with embryo testing and Porter has raised awareness and funds for HDSA.

Scott Porter says his fight against Huntington’s disease is personal: his mother-in-law has symptomatic Huntington’s, and his wife, Kelsey Mayfield, was reported as testing positive for the Huntington’s gene. The diagnosis reshaped how the couple planned their family and led Porter to advocate publicly for research, treatment and support.

Why Huntington’s disease became personal for Scott Porter

Porter has explained that Huntington’s entered his immediate family through his mother-in-law. She reportedly spent about three years trying to find the cause of worsening balance and motor-skill problems before receiving a Huntington’s diagnosis.

Because Huntington’s is inherited, Mayfield was then tested and was reported as gene-positive. The interviews describing that result do not establish that she was experiencing symptoms at the time. Porter has described the inheritance risk as “a 50-50 shot,” comparing it to a coin flip that “came up tails.”

For Porter, the emotional stakes include his children. He said, “I hope that one day I don’t have to sit my kids down and fully explain to them what is happening to their mother. That’s why we’re fighting so hard today.”

How the diagnosis changed the couple’s plans to have children

After learning about the inherited risk, Porter and Mayfield chose in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with embryo testing and selection. Their stated aim was to have children without passing Huntington’s disease to them.

What IVF and embryo testing meant in their case

  • IVF created embryos outside the body.
  • Embryos were tested for the Huntington’s genetic risk.
  • The couple selected embryos that did not carry the condition for transfer, according to their public descriptions of the process.

Mayfield discussed the process in a 2022 podcast interview, while Porter described the decision in earlier interviews. Those accounts explain the family’s reproductive choice; they do not provide a current medical update about Mayfield or her mother.

What Porter is fighting for

Porter has framed his advocacy around two connected goals: supporting his mother-in-law and other people living symptomatically with Huntington’s, and helping find better treatments or a cure. The family’s experience also exposed how long diagnosis can take when balance and motor changes have an unclear cause.

Support for people already living with symptoms

In comments to Hollywood Life, Porter said the family was fighting to support his mother-in-law and “other people out there who are living symptomatically with Huntington’s right now.” His public message is therefore not limited to genetic risk or family planning; it also concerns care and dignity for people with established disease.

Research and treatment

Porter has repeatedly connected fundraising with the hope of finding a cure or treatment. The available interviews and charity reporting are primarily from 2021 and 2022, so they should not be read as a statement of the family’s current status or of current treatment progress.

Porter became involved with the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA), using interviews and entertainment events to raise awareness and money.

What is known—and not known—about Kelsey Mayfield’s condition

  • Established in the cited interviews: Mayfield was reported as testing positive for the Huntington’s gene after her mother’s diagnosis.
  • Not established by those interviews: whether Mayfield had symptoms at that time, how her health has changed since, or what medical care she currently receives.
  • Also not established: the family’s current medical status or any fundraising total after the 2021 report.

Keeping those distinctions matters because a positive genetic result and symptomatic Huntington’s disease are not interchangeable descriptions.

Why his story resonates beyond one family

Porter’s account links three different parts of the Huntington’s experience: the difficulty of reaching a diagnosis, the consequences of an inherited genetic risk, and the practical decisions families may face when having children. His advocacy gives public visibility to each issue while directing support toward HDSA.
