Scott Hamilton calls himself “the luckiest man alive” not because his life has been free of hardship, but because skating, family, faith and his experiences with illness have shaped a deep sense of gratitude. In a February 2024 PEOPLE profile, the Olympic champion reflected on those experiences and the cancer advocacy that followed.
What Hamilton means by “the luckiest man alive”
Hamilton’s phrase is a personal outlook, not a claim that his life has been easy or a lesson about how anyone should respond to illness. He told PEOPLE, “I’m blessed beyond my wildest imagination.” He also described the events of his life as “kind of miraculous.” His perspective takes in both the opportunities skating gave him and the losses and health challenges he has faced.
As he put it, “I’m the most unlikely person on the planet to have experienced any of this.” The profile connects that reflection to his family, faith, Olympic career and work supporting people affected by cancer.
How skating shaped his story
Hamilton’s early life included a mysterious interruption in his growth: he stopped growing at age four, and doctors did not initially identify the cause. He later learned that an undetected brain tumor was likely responsible, according to the profile.

His mother, Dorothy, supported his skating. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976 and died in 1977. Hamilton recalled that her death helped him commit himself to training.
In 1984, Hamilton won men’s figure skating gold at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics. PEOPLE describes the victory as the end of a 24-year wait for a U.S. men’s gold medal and the culmination of a four-year undefeated run.

After leaving Ice Capades, Hamilton helped launch Stars on Ice. The 2024 profile reported that the tour had performed more than 1,500 shows since 1986. That is the count cited in the article at the time of publication, not a current total.
His cancer history—and an important distinction
Hamilton was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1997 and underwent successful surgery, the profile reports. Its correction makes a distinction worth stating clearly: Hamilton had one cancer diagnosis, testicular cancer. All three of the brain tumors discussed in the story were benign.

- Two pituitary tumors, discovered in 2004 and 2010, were benign and treated.
- A tumor discovered in 2016 was also benign. At the time of the 2024 interview, Hamilton said he had chosen to monitor it unless symptoms arose.

From personal experience to cancer advocacy
Hamilton says that after his cancer diagnosis, “I realized life was precious,” and that he wanted to become an activist. He founded Scott Hamilton CARES, an organization focused on cancer research, and started The 4th Angel, which pairs people who have recently been diagnosed with cancer with survivors.

The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation’s news archive describes its work as supporting cancer research and cancer-care grants. These initiatives are part of the story behind Hamilton’s outlook: his gratitude is connected not only to what he has endured, but also to what he has chosen to do for others.

Gillian Telling’s PEOPLE profile, updated February 26, 2024, reported Hamilton’s age as 65 at that time. It offers his account of skating, family, faith, illness and advocacy; it does not provide population-level cancer statistics or establish a broader medical conclusion. Its central point is personal: Hamilton sees his life, including its hardships, through a lens of gratitude.
