“Hottest” is a subjective hook, not an objective measure of Scarlett Johansson or her work. A more useful way to revisit the moments attached to that label is to consider what makes them memorable: character agency, performance, visual design, suspense, comedy, chemistry, and their effect on the story. The list below is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking.
Why this is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking
The exact headline appeared on a Fishki page dated April 25, 2016, credited to TheRichest. That page names films including Don Jon, Lost in Translation, The Prestige, The Island, Iron Man 2, Under the Skin, Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and The Avengers. It does not establish an authoritative order, and its scene descriptions are not independent verification. The 2016 list is best treated as a historical reference point rather than a verdict on Johansson’s screen work.
There is no objective way to determine which movie moment is “hottest.” The more defensible question is what makes a scene compelling on screen: what the character wants, how the performance communicates it, how the scene changes the story, and how directing, costume, and production design shape its tone. Applying those criteria turns a sexualized label into a discussion of filmmaking.
Two useful contexts for revisiting Johansson’s roles
Lost in Translation: connection rather than a simple romance
Focus Features describes Charlotte, played by Johansson, as a newlywed in Tokyo who meets Bob Harris (Bill Murray), an older movie star, and forms a friendship with him. Its retrospective emphasizes connection and care rather than reducing their relationship to romance. Sofia Coppola, the film’s writer-director, said, “I wanted the movie’s structure to have all the different parts of a relationship condensed in a few days,” and described it as being “about misunderstandings between people and places.” Both quotations are reproduced in the Focus Features retrospective. That context invites attention to Johansson’s restrained performance and the character’s isolation, not just to the film’s romantic associations.

Black Widow: a spy story shaped by Natasha’s past
Marvel describes Black Widow as an action spy thriller in which Natasha Romanoff confronts her past. Its official page credits Cate Shortland as director, lists Johansson in the cast, and gives July 9, 2021 as the film’s release date. Read through that framing, a striking moment in the film belongs to Natasha’s history and choices as a spy; it is not merely a look or costume detached from character. See Marvel’s official Black Widow page.
How to judge a memorable screen moment
- Agency: Is the character making a choice, shaping the exchange, or changing what happens next?
- Story function: Does the moment reveal a relationship, raise the stakes, shift the tone, or alter the viewer’s understanding?
- Performance: What do timing, stillness, expression, voice, or movement convey beyond the dialogue?
- Visual design: How do costume, lighting, framing, and setting contribute to the scene’s meaning?
- Tonal effect: Does the scene work through suspense, comedy, tenderness, unease, or chemistry?
- Staying power: Does it remain interesting when considered as filmmaking and characterization rather than as a sexualized image?
These criteria allow scenes from very different genres to be compared without pretending they share a universal score. They also make room for a viewer to disagree: one person may remember a moment for its tension, another for its wit or emotional reserve.
Checking a scene before treating it as fact
A list title or ranking does not confirm what happens in a particular scene. The older list supplies candidate films, but the available context does not independently verify each scene attributed to them. For scene-specific detail, consult the film itself or a primary production source. That distinction matters especially when a list’s wording reduces a character’s role to appearance: a reliable account should identify the film context and describe what the scene actually does.

For viewers interested in Natasha Romanoff’s place in the Avengers films, Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame page lists physical Blu-ray and DVD formats and names The Avengers Assembled: The Complete 4 Movie Collection. That is a collection listing, not a guarantee of current stock or of a particular regional edition; check the format and territory before buying. It is a practical viewing option, not evidence for any ranking of Johansson’s moments.
