She condemned the misuse of AI regardless of the video’s apparent message, warning that realistic fabrications can erode people’s shared sense of reality.
What the fake video showed
The video depicted Johansson and other public figures wearing a shirt with a Star of David and a raised middle finger alongside Kanye West’s name. It presented the figures as part of a collective protest against West’s remarks, although the celebrities shown had not necessarily taken part or consented to being depicted that way. ITV reported that Ori Bejerano posted the video with a notice that it had been digitally created or altered with AI to seem real. ITV News, February 13, 2025; Los Angeles Times, February 12, 2025.
Why Johansson objected
Johansson said family and friends alerted her to the circulating video. She rejected antisemitism and hate speech, but argued that an apparently agreeable message does not excuse using AI to fabricate someone’s participation. “We must call out the misuse of AI, no matter its messaging, or we risk losing a hold on reality,” she said in a statement reported by ITV.
Her central appeal was for broad U.S. legislation, not a specific bill: “I urge the U.S government to make the passing of legislation limiting AI use a top priority. It is a bipartisan issue that enormously affects the immediate future of humanity at large.” She also described an approaching “1000 foot wave” of AI—a metaphor, not a measured estimate. What the TAKE IT DOWN Act does—and does not do
After Johansson’s statement, Congress enacted the TAKE IT DOWN Act as Public Law 119-12 on May 19, 2025. Its scope is nonconsensual intimate visual depictions, including digital forgeries, and it creates notice-and-removal duties for covered platforms. It is not a general prohibition on AI-generated likenesses and does not, on the facts available about this political video, establish that the Act applies to it. Public Law 119-12, May 19, 2025.
The law distinguishes platform obligations from a broader question Johansson raised about AI use. The FTC began enforcing the Act’s platform requirements on May 19, 2026. The available reporting and legal sources do not determine which state-law claims, if any, might apply to this particular video, or how a parody or political-expression defense would be assessed. The federal law’s stated focus is intimate imagery, so it should not be treated as resolving every dispute over a synthetic public figure’s likeness.
