Hulu will not move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on March 14, 2026. The planned revival had not received a series order, so this was not a completed season being removed from the schedule. The sources reporting the decision do not establish why Hulu passed.
What happened to the Buffy reboot?
Gellar announced that Hulu had decided not to proceed with Buffy: New Sunnydale. TVLine reproduced her statement: “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.” TVLine’s March 14, 2026 report and The Guardian’s coverage describe a revival that did not get a series order—not a finished season that Hulu later pulled.

Why did Hulu cancel the revival?
Hulu’s reason has not been established in the available reporting. The Los Angeles Times reported that Gellar had not shared further details. Without a public explanation, claims about a specific executive, creative issue, or business rationale would be speculation.
What the proposed revival would have been
The project was planned as a continuation of the Buffy story, with Gellar returning as Buffy Summers and Ryan Kiera Armstrong playing a new Slayer. Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive-produce the pilot. Reported additional cast members were Sarah Bock, Ava Jean, Faly Rakotohavana, Jack Cutmore-Scott, and Daniel di Tomasso. These were plans for an unmade project; none of the proposed performances appeared in a released season.

Can you still watch the original Buffy series?
Hulu’s U.S. catalog listing currently shows the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer with seven seasons and 144 episodes. That is a catalog count, not a guarantee of availability in every country or indefinitely; streaming catalogs can change. Check Hulu’s series listing for current U.S. availability.
A physical edition titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete Series (Seasons 1–7) is documented in a Buffy studies journal bibliography, but that does not confirm current stock, disc region, or condition. Those details should be checked with a seller before buying.
