Why the feud rumors resurfaced
Gellar and Hewitt starred together in the original I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. Speculation flared again after they attended the Los Angeles premiere of the 2025 reboot but were not photographed posing together. An earlier moment also circulated: in December 2024, Gellar’s reaction to a question about Hewitt possibly returning drew attention. Us Weekly later reported that Gellar explained she was concerned about breaking an NDA by discussing casting. Us Weekly’s July 16, 2025 report recounts the premiere response and that earlier explanation.

What Sarah Michelle Gellar said about the premiere
In an Instagram comment responding to questions about the lack of a joint photo, Gellar wrote: “For everyone asking — I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened.” She added: “I sadly didn’t get pics with most of the cast.” Her explanation was that she missed the main carpet and photos with much of the cast—not that she avoided Hewitt.
What Jennifer Love Hewitt said about the rumors
In an interview with Vulture, reported by Us Weekly on July 18, 2025, Hewitt said: “I honestly don’t even know what that was or how that all came to be.” She also asked, “Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?” and said, “On my side, we’re good. I have no idea where this is coming from.” Us Weekly’s report on Hewitt’s comments attributes those statements to the interview.

Hewitt also said she had not seen Gellar since the original film. In remarks about that earlier period, reported by Us Weekly, she said: “I was 18. They were not taking script notes from me.” That describes her account of their contact and her age at the time; it does not, by itself, show there was a dispute.

The sequence reported publicly is straightforward: an earlier casting-related reaction drew attention, the actors did not pose together at the reboot premiere, Gellar said she had not seen Hewitt during the main carpet, and Hewitt said she did not understand the feud narrative and that they were fine on her side. Vanity Fair’s July 21, 2025 summary likewise describes how the missing premiere photo renewed speculation.
