Sarah Joseph’s novel Budhini reimagines the life of Budhini Mejhan, a Santal teenager whose village ostracised her after her welcome to Jawaharlal Nehru at a dam inauguration was interpreted as marriage. The English translation, by Joseph’s daughter Sangeetha Sreenivasan, was published in 2021; it is not the different new novel Joseph was reported to have sent to her publisher in 2026.
What is Sarah Joseph’s Budhini about?
The novel follows Rupi Murmu, a young journalist and distant relative of Budhini, as she investigates Budhini’s life. Penguin Random House India describes the book as a “reimagined history”: rather than offering a documentary biography, it uses Rupi’s search to revisit a story shaped by development, displacement and environmental change.

The novel’s central question is not simply what happened at a public ceremony, but whose lives and losses are remembered when a nation tells a story of progress. The publisher’s synopsis supplies the historical frame; the book’s connections between Budhini’s experience, modernization and ecological loss are part of Joseph’s literary interpretation.
Who was Budhini Mejhan, and why was she ostracised?
According to Penguin Random House India’s account, on 6 December 1959, Jawaharlal Nehru visited Dhanbad district—now in Jharkhand—to inaugurate the Panchet Dam across the Damodar River. Budhini, then fifteen and selected by the Damodar Valley Corporation, welcomed him with a garland and applied a tikka to his forehead.

The publisher says villagers interpreted those gestures as an act of matrimony. Budhini was ostracised for violating Santal traditions and lost her construction job. The word “marrying” in the story’s popular shorthand describes that interpretation, not a literal marriage to Nehru.
How did Joseph come to write the novel?
In a 2022 interview with Mint, Joseph said she first heard Budhini’s story from poet and social activist Civic Chandran at a River Protection Forum seminar in Chalakkudy, “maybe in 2014.” Chandran brought up Budhini while discussing people displaced by post-independence development projects.

Joseph said she came to see Budhini as representing people uprooted by nation-building, as well as farmland and forests submerged or lost in the process. As she put it, “I felt that Budhini represents the uprooted people and the submerged farmlands and forests that went missing during the great nation-building process.”
Joseph has also described how a woman’s perspective can shape a story’s language and form. In the same interview, she said: “If you are telling it from a woman’s perspective it will become a different narration—the language, idioms, images, style, proverbs and even words become distinct.” This is her account of her own approach, not a claim that women writers share one style.

Is Budhini a true story?
The novel is based on the story of a real woman as presented in the publisher’s account, but it should not be read as documentary reportage. Penguin calls it a reimagined history and identifies Rupi Murmu, the journalist through whose investigation the narrative unfolds, as part of the novel’s framing. The historical details above are therefore attributed to the publisher rather than presented as an independent investigation of Budhini’s life.
Who translated Budhini, and what edition is listed?
Sangeetha Sreenivasan translated the novel into English from Malayalam. Penguin Random House India lists the India Hamish Hamilton edition as published in April 2021. Its catalog entry gives the English hardback ISBN as 9780670093830, a length of 256 pages and a publisher MRP of ₹599. Those are catalog specifications, not a guarantee of a current price or live stock.

Recognition and Sarah Joseph’s later work
Budhini won the inaugural SheThePeople Women Writer’s Prize in 2021, according to Mint and The Indian Express. The Indian Express reported in August 2026 that Joseph had recently sent her publisher another novel. That later book is separate from Budhini, whose English edition appeared in 2021.
