Pompompurin won Sanrio’s 2025 Character Ranking with 5,613,659 votes. Hello Kitty finished fifth with 3,349,642. The result extended a six-year stretch without a Hello Kitty win: Cinnamoroll placed first from 2020 through 2024, before Pompompurin took the top spot in 2025.
Who won Sanrio’s 2025 character ranking?
Pompompurin took first place in the official final results. The poll ran from April 10 to May 25, 2025, and Sanrio reported 63,166,096 votes overall—the highest total in the event’s history at that time. These are fan-poll votes, not merchandise sales figures.
Sanrio’s 2025 results list the top five as follows:
| 2025 rank | Character | Votes | 2024 rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pompompurin | 5,613,659 | 4 |
| 2 | Cinnamoroll | 5,427,983 | 1 |
| 3 | Pochacco | 3,935,101 | 2 |
| 4 | Kuromi | 3,652,492 | 3 |
| 5 | Hello Kitty | 3,349,642 | 5 |
What does “Hello Kitty losing out for six years straight” mean?
Hello Kitty has not finished first since 2019. Cinnamoroll won five consecutive editions, from 2020 through 2024, and Pompompurin followed with the 2025 win. So the six-year count describes six rankings without a Hello Kitty victory; it does not mean one rival beat her for all six years. Sanrio’s 40th-anniversary retrospective confirms Cinnamoroll’s 2020–2024 run.

How did the leading characters change from 2024?
Among the five characters shown in the 2025 results table, Pompompurin rose from fourth to first. Cinnamoroll slipped from first to second, Pochacco from second to third, and Kuromi from third to fourth. Hello Kitty remained fifth. The movement describes year-to-year placement in the poll, not a change in sales or overall popularity outside it.
What the ranking measures—and what it does not
Sanrio describes the Character Ranking as an annual fan-voting event featuring its characters. The company says it began in 1986 in The Strawberry News, its monthly publication covering characters and merchandise. The result records votes and placements in that event; it does not establish which character sold the most products or generated the most revenue.
