Sania Mirza played her final professional match in Dubai on February 21, 2023. Her career joined two distinct achievements: a breakthrough in singles, including a WTA title and a career-high ranking of No. 27, and sustained dominance in doubles, where she reached No. 1 and won six major titles. Her records made her a pioneer for Indian women’s tennis; they do not require an unsupported claim that no other career in tennis history compares.
When did Sania Mirza retire?
Mirza announced on January 6, 2023, that she intended to retire at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships the following month. She had first planned to finish after the 2022 WTA Finals, but an elbow tendon injury before the US Open forced her to withdraw and end that season early. Her final professional match was in Dubai on February 21, 2023.
Her last Grand Slam appearance came shortly before that, at the 2023 Australian Open. Mirza and Rohan Bopanna reached the mixed doubles final, where they lost to Brazil’s Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos. The WTA announced her retirement plan, while Australian Open reporting covered the final and the WTA reported on her farewell in Dubai.
What were Mirza’s biggest career milestones?
Mirza turned professional in 2003. Her first major breakthrough came in singles: in 2005, she won the Hyderabad Open in her hometown, becoming the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title. The WTA also named her Newcomer of the Year that season. Her singles career-high ranking was No. 27.

How many Grand Slams did Sania Mirza win?
Mirza won six major titles: three in women’s doubles and three in mixed doubles. Her total reflects achievement across two formats, rather than a singles Grand Slam title. Her last chance to add to that tally was the 2023 Australian Open mixed doubles final, her final Grand Slam match.

After that final, Mirza put the record itself in perspective: “For me, whether I win six Grand Slams or seven Grand Slams, that wasn’t going to change much in my life, right? Sure, on the record books maybe another Slam, but for me, it’s more important how I’m doing it.” The WTA reported her comments after the match.
What do her singles and doubles records show?
Singles was where Mirza first broke through as an Indian woman on the WTA Tour. Doubles became the format of her highest ranking and most extensive title record. Those are complementary chapters in her career, not competing measures of its value.

Why did Sania Mirza retire?
The injury changed when Mirza finished, but her announcement described retirement as a planned next step. She had intended to stop after the 2022 WTA Finals; the elbow tendon injury before the US Open brought that season to an early end, and she instead completed her career in Dubai the following February.

After reaching the 2023 Australian Open mixed doubles final, she also spoke about choosing life beyond tennis: “Today I’m here, sitting after a Grand Slam final, knowing that I still have the level to make it to a Grand Slam final. I’m choosing to say that I want other things, and that is very important for me. I feel like after you have a child, especially, winning and losing tennis matches, it really puts things into perspective of how small or big that is.” These remarks explain her outlook; they do not reduce her decision to a single cause.

Her firsts offer the clearest measure of her significance: a WTA singles title for an Indian woman in 2005, the first Grand Slam doubles title by an Indian woman in 2015, and the first Indian woman to reach WTA No. 1. Those achievements made her a visible example of what Indian women could accomplish in professional tennis.
