Samaresh Majumdar was a Bengali-language novelist whose fiction brought the political turbulence of Bengal’s Naxalite years into the intimate lives of students, families and ordinary city dwellers. His best-known works are the connected Animesh novels: Uttaradhikar, Kalbela and Kalpurush, followed years later by Moushalkaal. His career also ranged across detective fiction, children’s writing, travelogues and screen adaptations.

Who was Samaresh Majumdar?

Majumdar was born in Jalpaiguri district on March 10, 1944, and died in Kolkata on May 8, 2023. He grew up amid the tea gardens of the Dooars in North Bengal, a landscape that would remain important to his fiction. He studied at Jalpaiguri Zilla School, then Bengali literature at Scottish Church College and the University of Calcutta. Scroll and BSS/PTI recount these biographical details.

Writing began by way of theatre rather than a planned literary career. Scroll reports that theatre work led him to write his first short story, “Antaratma,” which appeared in the Bengali magazine Desh. BSS/PTI dates that first story to 1967. His first novel, Dour (“The Race”), also appeared in Desh; BSS/PTI dates its publication to 1976.

What is the order of the Animesh novels?

Read the original trilogy in this order: Uttaradhikar, Kalbela, then Kalpurush. Moushalkaal is a later continuation, not part of the original three-book trilogy. Scroll places the trilogy’s publication between 1979 and 1985 and reports that Moushalkaal appeared in 2013.

Reading order Book Place in the sequence
1 Uttaradhikar First novel of the original Animesh trilogy
2 Kalbela Second novel of the trilogy
3 Kalpurush Third novel of the trilogy
4 Moushalkaal Later continuation of Animesh’s story

The sequence follows Animesh Mitra, who leaves the Dooars for Calcutta to study as the Naxalite movement is gathering force. The trilogy is most rewarding as a connected story, rather than as three unrelated novels: its political landscape develops alongside the pressures on Animesh and the people around him.

Is Kalbela based on the Naxalite movement?

Kalbela belongs to a sequence set against the political upheaval associated with the Naxalite movement. The novels engage with the violent ultra-left uprising of the mid-1960s and early 1970s, as well as the changing political climate that followed the mainstream Left’s electoral victory in 1977. Rather than treating those events as a political chronology alone, Majumdar brought them into the ambitions, relationships and moral choices of characters such as Animesh.

That emphasis on ordinary people is central to Scroll’s literary tribute: it argues that Majumdar made a period of upheaval legible through the feelings and aspirations of urban Bengalis. This is an interpretation of his achievement, not a claim that the novels offer a neutral historical account.

Majumdar also cautioned against reading Animesh as a direct portrait of himself. Scroll quotes him: “There might be a few similarities between Animesh and me, but I am not Animesh.”

Scroll and BSS/PTI report that Kalbela won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984. The Telegraph’s 2023 obituary gives the year as 1983, so the award year is disputed in these reports. Scroll, BSS/PTI and The Telegraph.

Which Samaresh Majumdar book should you read first?

Choose based on whether you want a political sequence or a different side of Majumdar’s range. If you want the political fiction most closely associated with his name, begin with Uttaradhikar and follow the trilogy in order. If you prefer a standalone entry point or a different genre, his detective and other novels offer another route.

What else did Majumdar write?

Majumdar’s career was not limited to the Animesh books. He created Arjun, a young detective associated with North Bengal settings, and wrote across thrillers, travelogues, children’s books and other fiction. Coverage names Satkahon, Dour, Buno Hnaash and Unish Bish among his other novels. Scroll reported in 2023 that he had written more than 200 novels and short stories.

His work also reached film and television audiences. Goutam Ghose’s film Kalbela appeared in 2009. BSS/PTI identifies the 2013 film Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan and the 2014 release Buno Haansh; reports also mention adaptations of Arjun stories and Saatkahon. Spellings vary across sources and transliterations.

Sirshendu Mukherjee, recalling Majumdar in The Telegraph, called him “a master storyteller with a lucid style and a great eye for detail.”
