What was Samantha Eggar known for?
The Collector (1965)
Eggar played Miranda, an art-school student abducted and held captive by Freddie, played by Terence Stamp, in William Wyler’s psychological thriller. Adapted from John Fowles’s novel, the film showcased Eggar in a role that could be both frightened and forceful. Her performance earned an Academy Award nomination. The Guardian obituary describes the contrasting sides of her work as “terrified or terrifying.” The Los Angeles Times also reports that she received the Cannes Film Festival actress prize and a Golden Globe for the film.
Doctor Dolittle (1967)
Two years later, Eggar played Emma Fairfax opposite Rex Harrison in the musical adventure Doctor Dolittle. Recalling the production, she said, “I got 13 costume changes and a free trip to the Caribbean. Who’s complaining?” and “I loved being around the animals,” as quoted in the Guardian’s obituary.

The Brood (1979)
Eggar took the role of Nola Carveth in David Cronenberg’s horror film The Brood, another prominent credit in a career that moved between genres and formats.
Her work extended beyond three feature films
Eggar’s credits also included television. The Guardian notes appearances in Columbo and Murder, She Wrote. The Television Academy’s profile lists work in Anna and the King, The Legend of Prince Valiant, Hercules, All My Children, and Commander in Chief. Her daughter Jenna Stern described her as “beautiful, intelligent, and tough enough to be fascinatingly vulnerable,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
