Frank’s account includes a period of excess in Thailand and his later movement toward sobriety and Buddhist practice. Rick listens with visible surprise. The scene gives viewers a glimpse of a history between the men while setting up a sharp difference between how each is responding to the past.
What does Frank’s monologue mean?
Frank describes pursuing fulfillment through increasingly extreme desires before turning away from that cycle. Sam Rockwell, speaking to GQ in an interview published June 16, 2025, said Mike White used the monologue to bring the season’s conflict between selfishness and the search for spirituality to a head. Rockwell described Frank as enlightened and called the speech positive in its outlook.

- The disk has English audio and subtitles.
That is Rockwell’s interpretation of the character and the scene, not a claim that Frank has resolved every conflict in his life. Nor is Frank presented as a Buddhist teacher or as an authoritative guide to Buddhist doctrine. His story is a character’s personal account, rather than a general statement about Thai people or religious practice.
Why is Frank important to Rick?
Rick is pursuing the man he believes killed his father, Jim Hollinger. Frank, by contrast, recounts trying to leave destructive habits behind. The juxtaposition makes Frank a foil for Rick: one is describing a turn away from old patterns while the other remains caught up in an unresolved grievance.

Frank also gives Rick a rare chance to be with a friend from before the events currently shaping his life. Walton Goggins told TV Insider in coverage published March 16, 2025 that the moment lets Rick spend time with a true friend outside his relationship with Chelsea, and called its effect significant: “Everything changes in that moment.” Goggins and Rockwell were longtime friends themselves, which Goggins said helped the scene’s listening dynamic. He credited White with writing the monologue.
How Sam Rockwell came to the role
GQ reported that White called Rockwell while the actor was working in South Africa and asked him to deliver the episode’s major monologue. Rockwell made suggestions to White, and they agreed to proceed. He said he prepared with an acting coach, researched Buddhism, and approached Frank’s story as positive rather than depressive. He described the shoot as a short commitment.

Rick’s target is Jim Hollinger, the man Rick believes killed his father. The distinction matters: the story’s account of Rick’s belief should not be mistaken for proof that the belief is true. Men’s Health’s March 17, 2025 explainer provides further context for Rick’s pursuit.
