For Sam Rockwell’s most recognizable dance moments, start with the “Simon Says” scene in Charlie’s Angels, then look for his performances in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Moon, Iron Man 2, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Conviction and The Way, Way Back. They range from comic character work to an unchoreographed scene with a young co-star; they are not all examples of one dance style or evidence that every moment was improvised.
Sam Rockwell dance scenes to search for
These are well-documented examples, not a complete inventory of every time Rockwell dances on screen. Search the film title with the scene description to distinguish the moment you want.
| Film | Scene to look for | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Charlie’s Angels (2000) | Eric Knox in the “Simon Says” lair sequence | Rockwell recalled that the second unit shot the sequence, that James Brown was played, and that he did the splits and asked for a slippery floor so he could slide. A dance-scene guide identifies “Simon Says” by Pharoahe Monch as the music associated with the sequence. GQ interview; Den of Geek scene guide |
| Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) | Chuck Barris dancing amid his entertainer persona and the film’s spy-story passages | The Guardian describes dance as part of Barris’s public performance. Miramax lists official clips from the film, but its listing does not establish that the dance scene itself is available. The Guardian interview; Miramax profile |

| Conviction (2010) | Kenny dancing at a bar with his infant daughter | The Guardian and Den of Geek include this moment among Rockwell’s dance scenes. The Guardian interview; Den of Geek scene guide |

Was Sam Rockwell’s dancing improvised or trained?
There is no single answer for all the scenes. Rockwell’s account of Charlie’s Angels describes choices he made during a specific shoot, while the cast’s account of The Way, Way Back explicitly describes a scene made without a choreographer. Neither establishes that every film dance was improvised.
In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Rockwell said, “I used to breakdance. I can do some good James Brown footwork,” then added that he felt he had danced too much. In GQ’s discussion of Fosse/Verdon, he drew a distinction between that formal role preparation and his casual film dancing: “My dancing is just screwing around, you know?” He said he was not a dancer and described learning dance vocabulary from Marianne Lamb for the series. How to find clips
- Start with Miramax’s Sam Rockwell profile for its official Confessions of a Dangerous Mind clip listings.
- For a particular moment, search the film title alongside a scene identifier, such as “Charlie’s Angels Simon Says,” “Moon dance-off,” or “Justin Hammer dance.”
- Check the clip itself against the film and character in the scene guide above; a studio clip listing does not necessarily include every scene.
Current full-film and clip availability can vary by service and territory. The available listings do not establish where every scene or complete film can be watched now.
