Saltburn is a lavish, unsettling English Gothic about an outsider’s hunger for entry into an aristocratic world. Emerald Fennell makes that world seductively strange and frequently shocking; the film is most entertaining when its excess exposes how power works, and most confusing when provocation seems to stand in for a coherent judgment of the people it depicts.
What is Saltburn about?
Set in the mid-2000s—the Associated Press identifies the summer as 2006—the film follows Oxford student Oliver Quick as he is drawn into the orbit of wealthy classmate Felix Catton. Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at Saltburn, his family’s sprawling estate, where the visitor’s access to the household brings him close to a kind of privilege he has not known.
That outsider-insider setup gives the story its engine: Oliver can enter the house, but entering a world is not the same as belonging to it. Fennell wrote and directed the film, which opened the 2023 BFI London Film Festival. The British Council’s record lists a 127-minute runtime; the BBFC lists 130 minutes 47 seconds for the 2023 UK cinema classification, and 130 minutes 41 seconds for its 2024 home-entertainment classification. These are different source and version listings, not a single agreed runtime. British Council film record; BBFC classification records.
How well does the Gothic setting serve the class story?
Fennell told the AP, “I really wanted to make a movie that was a take on the classic English gothic story.” The estate is more than a luxurious backdrop: its rooms, rituals and unspoken social rules make class feel like an atmosphere Oliver has to breathe and interpret. Saltburn’s allure is inseparable from its power to make an outsider feel both welcomed and watched.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That approach suits Fennell’s interest in codes of money and privilege. She described the underlying dynamic as “It all works the same way. It’s power. Who wants it and who’s got it.” The film’s strongest Gothic effect comes from treating social access as an intimate, unstable contest rather than an abstract lecture. AP interview with Emerald Fennell.
Is Saltburn a takedown of the wealthy?
It is certainly fascinated by wealth’s insulation: the Cattons’ world has its own codes, comforts and assumptions, and Oliver’s presence makes those boundaries visible. But the film does not settle into a simple “eat the rich” argument. Fennell has also described its emotional center as the intensity of wanting something for the first time and called it a love story. That framing makes Oliver’s longing central, alongside ambition and class resentment.

The tension is productive when desire and power complicate each other—when attraction to the world of Saltburn becomes difficult to separate from the wish to possess it. It is less productive when the film’s extravagant shocks leave unclear whether its targets are the wealthy, the outsider who covets their world, or the audience enjoying the spectacle. Fennell’s stated intention offers context, not a guarantee that every scene makes the argument legible.
Do the performances and provocations hold together?
The performances help keep the film watchable even as its tone veers between social observation, Gothic unease and outrageous spectacle. Yet characterization does not always acquire the depth needed to make those shifts feel like parts of a single moral or emotional design. The result is a film whose energy can outpace its clarity: its boldness is a genuine pleasure, but shock alone does not resolve what the story thinks about power.

That division is visible in the response collected on Rotten Tomatoes. Its displayed critics consensus calls Saltburn a “debauched jolt to the senses,” while the page’s individual responses include both praise for intensity and performances and criticism of character treatment or coherence. That is a snapshot of varied criticism, not a permanent scorecard. Rotten Tomatoes: Saltburn.
Is Saltburn disturbing?
Yes, it contains deliberately transgressive material, and its shocks are part of the film’s method rather than a minor tonal detour. The UK BBFC classification is for strong sex, nudity, sexual threat, drug misuse and very strong language. Its detailed advice also notes suicide references, eating-disorder references, grief and flashing images. This is UK classification guidance, not a universal age rating; viewers sensitive to those subjects may want to consult the BBFC’s full content advice before watching. BBFC content advice.

Is Saltburn worth watching?
For viewers drawn to stylish Gothic storytelling, volatile performances and audacious tonal swings, yes. It offers a memorable estate-bound power struggle and enough visual and emotional nerve to make its excess entertaining. Those looking for a precise, consistent critique of class may find it less satisfying: the film’s provocation sometimes sharpens its themes and sometimes clouds them. Its most compelling quality is also its central uncertainty—how much of its spectacle is exposing power, and how much is simply seduced by it?
