Kirkland described the importance of stage training in a 1991 interview with the Los Angeles Times, quoted by AP: “I don’t think any actor can really call him or herself an actor unless he or she puts in time with Shakespeare.” SAG-AFTRA, in a statement reported by AP, called her “a fearless performer whose artistry and advocacy spanned more than six decades.”
Why did ‘Anna’ earn Sally Kirkland an Oscar nomination?
In Anna (1987), Kirkland played a fading Czech movie star trying to rebuild her life in the United States while mentoring a younger actor, played by Paulina Porizkova. The role brought Kirkland her most prominent film-award recognition: the Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and a 1988 Golden Globe win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture—Drama.
