Spoilers for the 1975 novel and the 2024 film. Gary Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot keeps recognizable pieces of Stephen King’s vampire story but reshapes them for a feature focused on a smaller group of heroes. The biggest differences follow from that choice: less of the town’s story, a more creature-like Barlow, and a drive-in showdown in place of the book’s house-to-house counterattack.
The 2024 feature, written and directed by Gary Dauberman, was released for streaming on October 3, 2024, according to Stephen King’s official filmography. Dauberman described the adaptation as a process of choosing the core story and characters that could fit into a one-sitting film. That framework helps explain why the movie changes not just individual scenes but the scale and emphasis of the novel.
1. The town-wide story narrows to the central vampire hunt
King’s novel gives space to Salem’s Lot’s residents and their intersecting lives, making the town itself feel like an ensemble. The film concentrates more tightly on the central heroes and their effort to confront the vampires. Dauberman said he had to decide whose stories could not fit and described cutting side stories and B-stories to give the main characters more room. The result is a more direct hunt, with less of the book’s accumulating picture of a community being taken over.
2. Marsten House and Ben’s past get less explanation
The house remains an ominous focal point, but the released film gives less space to its history and to Ben Mears’s childhood encounter there than the novel does. Dauberman said he shot additional material about the house and Ben’s past, then reduced it because he worried it could make the film feel like a ghost story as well as a vampire story. In a Gizmodo interview, he said of the cut material: “So I shot that. I have that.” The distinction matters: the material was filmed, but it is not part of the released version’s emphasis.

3. Barlow is more creature than European nobleman
In the novel, Barlow is closer to a European nobleman; the film presents him as a more monstrous creature. Dauberman told Den of Geek that an earlier design was closer to the book and the 2004 adaptation, but it “ate up a lot of real estate.” After discussions with producer James Wan and further design exploration, he moved toward a creature version, drawing in part on the 1979 adaptation. He said, “I kept going back to the ’79 version.” The change is therefore both a visual reinterpretation and a practical choice about how much screen time to devote to the vampire.
4. Supporting characters’ arcs are compressed or altered
The movie reduces or changes several supporting-character stories rather than carrying all of the novel’s arcs forward intact. A comparison published by Fantasy Archives describes especially substantial differences for Father Callahan and Matt Burke:

- Father Callahan: The novel’s arc of spiritual collapse and service to Barlow is replaced in the film by his death.
- Matt Burke: His role and fate are changed from the book’s version.
These differences illustrate how the film reallocates story weight to the central group; the comparison source, rather than Dauberman’s stated adaptation rationale, is the basis for these specific plot distinctions.
5. Dr. Cody is a woman in the film
The novel’s Dr. Cody is male; the 2024 film recasts the character as a woman, played by Alfre Woodard. The adaptation retains the doctor’s important function in recognizing the supernatural threat, while changing the character’s gender and casting.

6. The counterattack moves from houses to a drive-in
In the novel, the heroes’ counterattack involves going house to house. The film relocates that action to a drive-in, where vampires emerge from car trunks as the sun sets behind the screen. The Massachusetts Film Office’s production feature identifies the drive-in as a key change in the staging. It turns the climax into a public, cinematic set piece and connects the vampire attack to the movie’s retro moviegoing atmosphere.
7. The film embraces a 1970s drive-in and grindhouse tone
Rather than modernize King’s story, Dauberman set the film in the period in which King imagined it. The 1970s setting supports a deliberately lurid, playful horror tone, with the drive-in serving as more than just a new location for the action. This tonal choice lets the film lean into period genre cinema while still adapting the novel’s central vampire threat.

8. The film leaves the ending’s next step less explicit
Fantasy Archives describes the novel as making Ben and Mark’s intention to return and destroy the town clearer than the movie does. The film ends with them driving away without stating that plan. This is a difference in explicit closure: the last scene does not spell out what they intend to do afterward.
9. Susan’s mother becomes an active threat
Fantasy Archives also reports that Susan’s mother becomes a weapon-bearing ally of Barlow after Straker’s death, unlike her role in the novel. The change gives the film an additional human antagonist in its final confrontation, instead of limiting the threat to the vampires. This specific comparison comes from a secondary plot account.

10. Familiar images remain, but their context changes
The adaptation retains recognizable elements, including the Glick boys’ story and the image of a floating boy at a window. It also places a Sugar Hill poster in Mark’s room and draws on imagery associated with an old paperback cover of the novel. These references show that the film’s substantial changes coexist with deliberate visual nods to King’s book and its cultural influences.
What the changes add up to
The film does not simply remove pieces at random: it trades the novel’s broader town portrait for a more concentrated vampire story, then gives that story a period drive-in look and a creature-focused Barlow. Its most striking differences are in scope, emphasis, and climax staging; its retained set pieces keep the adaptation visibly connected to the book.
