Akash Kailash Kanojia said he lost his job and a marriage proposal after railway police detained him in Durg on January 18, 2025, while investigating the stabbing of actor Saif Ali Khan. News reports said he was released after police found his identity did not match the suspect they were seeking. The reported consequences are Kanojia’s and his family’s account; the sources reviewed do not establish what happened afterward.
Why was Akash Kanojia detained?
India Today reported that the Railway Protection Force detained Kanojia in Durg, Chhattisgarh, after receiving a tip-off from Mumbai Police. Scroll, citing PTI, said Kanojia was 31 and travelling on the Mumbai–Kolkata Jnaneshwari Express to meet a prospective bride. India Today said he was released after police determined that his identity did not match the suspect.
The reports describe a mistaken detention, but the sources reviewed do not include an official finding that establishes responsibility for it. India Today attributed to Kanojia the complaint that investigators failed to notice a difference in facial hair between him and the person seen in CCTV footage. India Today’s January 27 report reproduces his account.
What did Kanojia say the detention cost him?
Kanojia told India Today that his employer had told him not to report for work. His grandmother, Tulsa Bai Yadav, said the prospective bride’s family stopped the marriage discussions after the detention. These are reported statements by Kanojia and his grandmother, not independently documented employment records or confirmation from the other family.

Yadav also said the family had demanded compensation from the government. The reviewed reporting does not establish whether a compensation claim was formally filed, decided, or paid.
Who was arrested in the stabbing investigation?
On January 19, 2025, Mumbai Police announced the arrest of Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad as a suspect in the stabbing, according to the Associated Press. An arrest announcement is an allegation at that stage of a criminal case, not a court’s final finding of guilt. The Associated Press report covers the police announcement.
The Indian Express reported that a court granted five days of police custody after investigators sought extended remand. Those details describe procedure as reported at the time; they do not prove the allegations or establish the case’s current status. The Indian Express report explains the remand proceedings.

The reviewed reports do not establish whether Kanojia later found work, whether the marriage discussions resumed, or whether his family received compensation.
