Nandini Ramnath’s 2016 interview traces Sai Tamhankar’s path from Marathi television and small film parts to more visible cinema roles, while examining the “bold and beautiful” label that followed her. Tamhankar described seeking variety rather than a particular billing or screen image; a later interview suggests the tags remained difficult to shake.
From television and small parts to a turning point
In her 7 November 2016 Scroll interview, journalist Nandini Ramnath reports that Tamhankar began acting in Marathi television in 2006, while studying commerce in Sangli. College theatre had drawn her toward acting. Her early film appearances included a dialogue-free part in the Hindi film Ghajini (2008), followed by a varied run of roles that were often small.
Ramnath identifies Sanjay Jadhav’s Duniyadari (2013), in which Tamhankar played one of four college friends, as a professional turning point. The interview then places her in both popular and offbeat projects, including Pyaar Vaali Love Story (2014), Tu Hi Re and Hunterrr (2015), and YZ, Jaudya Na Balasaheb and Vazandar (2016). These are examples discussed in that profile, not a complete filmography.
Good work mattered more than billing
Tamhankar told Ramnath she chose projects impulsively when something about a role resonated with her. She was interested in risk and in parts that left a “thin line” between possible interpretations. Her stated priority was the work, not the size of the part: “I am in search of good work, irrespective of the length of the role. Whether it’s the second lead or the third lead doesn’t matter.”

The interview also includes director Sanjay Jadhav’s criticism of her planning and preparation, alongside his praise of her easy rapport. That is Jadhav’s assessment in this account, not an objective measure of her ability or working method.
How the “bold and beautiful” image took hold
The 2016 profile connects the label to Tamhankar’s visibility, styling and interview manner, as well as to roles such as the seductive housebreaker in No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey (2012), Balak Palak (2013) and Pune 52 (2013). Ramnath’s account does not present Tamhankar as simply rejecting the image: she welcomed being seen as desirable, while also pointing to devoted wives, girlfriends and other character types in her work.

A later OTTplay interview, published approximately in 2022, offers her subsequent perspective. Tamhankar said the tags persisted even when she took on non-glamorous work: “Bold and beautiful are the tags that are forever attached to my name. Because of that, even when I would do something different or non-glamorous, my tags would always overpower that. I had to make sure that with every project, there’s so much variety that you cannot say that I mean bold.” In her account, role variety was a way to complicate the label, not evidence that it had disappeared.
Vazandar: a different screen persona
The immediate context for Ramnath’s 2016 profile is Vazandar, a Marathi comedy written and directed by Sachin Kundalkar. Tamhankar and Priya Bapat play friends dealing with weight gain, dieting and self-esteem. Scroll reported that Tamhankar gained 10 kilos for the role; this is the figure reported by the 2016 interview, not an independently verified measurement.

Kundalkar described her as “our first clearly urban film actress.” He also said, as quoted by Ramnath, “She is very much at ease with her body, because of which people call her bold, but she is actually daring and honest.” His comments frame the film’s changed persona as part of the same conversation about how audiences interpret Tamhankar’s ease and screen presence.
