Sade’s “Young Lion” is a song for her son, Izaak Adu, whose response makes its apology more complicated than a simple story of forgiveness. The lyrics include “Forgive me, son, I should have known,” but Izaak said he had nothing he needed to forgive his mother for. The track is part of Transa, Red Hot Organization’s project celebrating the trans community and raising awareness of trans rights.
What “Young Lion” says—and what Izaak said in response
The song’s central apology is direct: “Forgive me, son, I should have known.” In an interview with The Independent, published 25 October 2024, Izaak Adu said: “Though there was nothing I needed to forgive her for, the lyrics ‘Forgive me, son, I should have known,’ struck a chord.”

He also described his experience with his mother in his own words: “My mum never tried to oppress the boy I silently always knew I was. She always let me be me.” That is Izaak’s account of their relationship; it should not be treated as a statement about how other trans people experience family acceptance.
His response distinguishes being moved by the lyric from believing he was owed an apology. The song’s language acknowledges a possible gap in understanding, while Izaak’s remarks resist turning that acknowledgment into a claim that he needed to forgive Sade. The available reporting does not establish further details about their private relationship.

How the song fits into Transa
“Young Lion” appears on Transa, a 46-track compilation described by Sade’s official website as a project by Red Hot Organization celebrating the trans community and raising awareness of trans rights. The song is therefore both a personal address, as reflected in its lyrics and Izaak’s comments, and part of a wider compilation project.
Release references point to distinct dates and editions. The Independent’s report about the song appeared on 25 October 2024. Billboard Canada reported that “Young Lion” was the first track on the Transa: Selects sampler EP, available digitally and on vinyl. Sade’s official website dated its “Young Lion” video news entry 27 November 2024. The sampler and the full 46-track Transa compilation are separate releases; those dates should not be mistaken for a single release event.

Where to find the song
Billboard Canada’s 25 October 2024 report identifies “Young Lion” as the opening track on Transa: Selects and says that sampler was available digitally and on vinyl. That report establishes the sampler’s formats at the time, not current stock or availability. Check the track listing for the specific edition before buying a physical copy, since a vinyl edition of the sampler is not the same as the full compilation.
