Ryan Gosling was part of the Academy’s rehearsal buildup for the 96th Oscars, held on March 10, 2024. The Academy’s rehearsal gallery, published the day before, includes Gosling; he was preparing for the ceremony as a supporting-actor nominee for Barbie and performer of the film’s song “I’m Just Ken.”
What the rehearsal photo is about
The Academy published its “Behind the Scenes at the 96th Oscars Rehearsals” gallery on March 9, 2024, and included Ryan Gosling. The ceremony was scheduled for the following day at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The gallery does not provide a detailed description of the particular image, so the headline’s “fun energy” should be read as its characterization rather than a verified account of a specific gesture or expression.
Why Gosling was rehearsing
Gosling was nominated for the 2024 Academy Award for supporting actor for his role as Ken in Barbie. The film’s “I’m Just Ken,” with music and lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, was nominated for original song. Those nominations put the actor and song at the center of his planned appearance at the ceremony.
What happened during the Oscars performance
Gosling did perform “I’m Just Ken” at the ceremony. In its March 11, 2024, account, the Associated Press reported that dancers playing Kens warmed up in the lobby about half an hour beforehand and that the audience stood and danced during the number. AP also described director Greta Gerwig as being in great spirits afterward and reported that she called the performance “legendary.”
