The jury found St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company, a Travelers subsidiary, liable in a dispute over insurance payments tied to Ferguson’s earlier civil-rights case. A judge later increased the reported judgment to more than $45.1 million, and Travelers posted a bond while pursuing an appeal. The final appeal outcome and the amount Ferguson ultimately collected are not established by the available reporting.
What the $38 million figure refers to
On November 1, 2024, a jury returned a $37.9 million verdict against St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company. Ferguson’s attorneys report that it comprised $2.9 million in compensatory damages and $35 million in punitive damages. The commonly used “$38 million” is that verdict rounded to the nearest million; it is not a report of a completed payment. Ferguson’s attorneys’ case-results page is the source for the verdict figure and breakdown.
The defendant was the insurer, not the City of Columbia in a new trial over Ferguson’s wrongful conviction. The insurer litigation concerned its payment obligations and alleged bad-faith handling of coverage connected to the earlier civil-rights case. The Associated Press described the dispute and the jury’s finding of bad faith and vexatious refusal to pay in its June 2025 report.
How the amount changed after the jury verdict
| Stage | Reported amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| November 1, 2024 jury verdict | $37.9 million | $2.9 million compensatory and $35 million punitive damages, according to Ferguson’s attorneys. |
| June 2025 court ruling | $43.8 million | A judge’s ruling reflecting the verdict and amounts accumulated over time, as reported by Missouri News Network. |
| October 2025 amended ruling | More than $45.1 million | The later judgment amount reported by Missouri News Network; it is not the original jury verdict. |
| October 2025 bond | $50 million | Travelers posted the bond to suspend the judgment while pursuing an appeal, according to Missouri News Network. A bond is not proof that Ferguson collected that amount. |
The June and October figures and the bond were reported by Missouri News Network. The available reports do not establish what happened after the October 2025 appeal-related development or how much money, if any, Ferguson ultimately received.

Why Ferguson’s wrongful-conviction case matters here
Ferguson was convicted in 2005 of second-degree murder and robbery in the 2001 killing of Kent Heitholt, a sports editor at the Columbia Daily Tribune. In 2013, an appeals court vacated the conviction after finding that prosecutors had withheld evidence. Prosecutors decided not to retry him, CBS News reported in its coverage of his release.
In 2014, Ferguson sued the City of Columbia and six police officers in federal court in a civil-rights action. He received an award reported as approximately $11 million in 2017. The later insurer case dealt with the insurer’s obligation to pay under its policy and its handling of payment; it produced the separate 2024 verdict. The distinction matters: the $37.9 million was not a second jury damages award against the city for the conviction itself.

Ferguson’s attorneys say the six officers would receive a combined 14 percent of the 2024 verdict. That is the plaintiffs’ account of the allocation and should not be assumed to describe the allocation of the later amended judgment.
What the “Amazing Race” reference means
Ferguson is also known to television audiences for appearing on The Amazing Race. That reference identifies him; it is not part of the damages case. The verdict and later judgment concern the insurer dispute that followed his wrongful-conviction civil-rights litigation.

What remains unknown
Missouri News Network reported in October 2025 that Travelers had posted a $50 million bond while pursuing an appeal. That report does not establish the appeal’s final disposition, whether the judgment was later changed, or the amount Ferguson ultimately collected. The jury verdict, later court judgments, a bond, and money actually paid are distinct things; the available sources establish the first three, not the last.
