They portray new FBI agents assigned to a dormant division for unexplained-phenomena cases. Hulu ordered a pilot, and Himesh Patel said in June 2026 that filming had wrapped; a full-series order had not been announced in that report.
Who stars in Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot?
Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel lead the project as a new pair of FBI agents. TheWrap reported Patel’s casting opposite Deadwyler on March 26, 2026, and described the show’s premise as follows: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” TheWrap’s casting report reproduces the official logline.
The “Mulder and Scully” comparison describes the central-agent pairing, not the characters being recast. TVLine reported on March 26 that Deadwyler and Patel would play new characters, rather than Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
Are Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler playing Mulder and Scully?
No. Patel confirmed the distinction in a June 30, 2026 interview with The Direct: “Needless to say, myself and Danielle Deadwyler are playing completely new characters, and we just wrapped on the pilot. If we get to do more… we’ll see where we go from there.” The comment makes clear both that the leads are new characters and that the pilot had finished filming by then. The project therefore starts with a familiar format—a contrasting pair investigating the unexplained—but does not simply substitute two actors for the original agents in the lead roles.
Could David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson appear?
Possibly, but the available comment is an expectation, not a formal casting announcement. In an August 15, 2026 interview with The Daily Beast, original series creator Chris Carter said, “At least Gillian, I think, is going to appear in the Coogler version. And I’m assuming David will too, so you will see Mulder and Scully there.” Carter also said he did not know how extensively Coogler’s project would engage with the original series. The Daily Beast interview does not establish confirmed casting, the actors’ roles, or how much they might appear.

That differs from the status reported by TVLine on March 26, when neither Duchovny nor Anderson was attached to the pilot. Carter’s later remarks point to a possible connection, but they do not resolve the casting question.
What is the reboot’s production status?
Hulu ordered a pilot on February 23, 2026, with Coogler set to write and direct it, according to TheWrap’s initial report. Patel said the pilot had wrapped by June 30. The Direct described a full-series order as a subsequent hurdle; the cited reporting did not announce that Hulu had ordered a series.

TheWrap reported that Coogler and Jennifer Yale are executive producers, with Yale also serving as showrunner. Proximity Media, Onyx Collective, and 20th Television are among the project entities named in its March casting coverage. No release date or episode count was established in those reports, so the pilot’s completion should not be mistaken for a premiere announcement.

The original series aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002, returned for revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, and expanded into feature films released in 1998 and 2008, according to TheWrap’s franchise coverage. Whether that setup becomes a continuation closely tied to the original characters, or a story that primarily stands on its own, remains unsettled. Carter’s remarks suggest he expects Mulder and Scully to appear, but he did not specify their roles or the degree of continuity.
