Ruth Buzzi, the comedian and actor whose handbag-swinging Gladys Ormphby became one of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In’s defining characters, died at her Texas home on May 1, 2025. She was 88. The Associated Press reported that Buzzi had Alzheimer’s disease and was receiving hospice care; the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, citing a post on her official Facebook page, reported that she died peacefully in her sleep.
How old was Ruth Buzzi when she died?
Buzzi was 88. The Television Academy records her birth as July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, and her death as May 1, 2025. She spent her final years in Texas. Her husband, Kent Perkins, thanked fans shortly before her death, saying she wanted them to know she had probably had more fun performing the shows than audiences had watching them.
Who was Gladys Ormphby?
Gladys Ormphby was Buzzi’s signature Laugh-In character: a drab, hairnet-wearing woman whose handbag became a weapon against anyone who irritated her. The character turned everyday frustration and social invisibility into broad physical comedy. Buzzi later told The Connecticut Post that Gladys represented “the overlooked, the downtrodden, the taken for granted, the struggler.”
Laugh-In creator and producer George Schlatter had encountered Buzzi on The Steve Allen Comedy Hour. During auditions, he received a photograph of her in the Ormphby costume and recognized the character’s potential. Schlatter later discussed hiring her in his memoir Still Laughing: A Life in Comedy.

Buzzi’s six-season Laugh-In run
Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In ran from 1968 through 1973. The Associated Press reported that Buzzi was the only regular performer to appear in all six seasons, including the pilot. Her work helped define the program’s rapid-fire sketches, recurring personas and deliberately exaggerated visual style.
Her comedy was not limited to the show’s catchphrases or costume gags. Buzzi’s characters often gave an absurd edge to recognizable experiences—being ignored, irritated or pushed aside—while her precise timing made even a short sketch memorable.

After Laugh-In, her credits included That Girl, The Lost Saucer and Sesame Street. She also worked extensively in film and animation, supplying voices for cartoon productions. The Associated Press described her career as lasting 45 years and credited her with more than 200 television appearances; that figure is an approximate career measure, not a complete count of every screen or stage credit.

Her view of the work
Buzzi resisted treating fame as an entitlement. In a 2018 interview with The Connecticut Post, she said, “I never took my work for granted, nor assumed I deserved more of the credit or spotlight or more pay than anyone else.” That perspective fits a performer whose influence often came through ensemble sketches and sharply drawn supporting characters rather than a single leading-role vehicle.
Journey Gunderson, executive director of the National Comedy Center, said Buzzi brought “a singular energy and charm to sketch comedy” and that characters such as Gladys Ormphby captured “the delightful absurdity of the era.”

What happened to Ruth Buzzi?
Reports on Buzzi’s final illness should be read with their attributions intact. The Associated Press reported Alzheimer’s disease and hospice care. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram said Buzzi had been in hospice for several years and attributed the account of her peaceful death in sleep to a post on her official Facebook page. Those reports describe the circumstances; they do not establish a more medically specific cause independently.
Why Ruth Buzzi’s comedy endures
Gladys Ormphby remains recognizable because the joke was larger than the handbag: Buzzi transformed a character designed to be overlooked into the person audiences watched most closely. Her six-season presence gave Laugh-In continuity, while her theater, television, film and voice work showed that the performer behind Gladys could move between musical comedy, sitcoms, children’s programming and animation.
Buzzi’s legacy is therefore both specific and broad: she created one of television sketch comedy’s indelible figures and built a 45-year body of work around exact timing, physical commitment and empathy for characters on the margins.
