Born William Lee Golden, Jr., on January 3, 1959, in Brewton, Alabama, he was the eldest son of William Lee and Frogene Golden. His family began calling him Rusty shortly after he was born. He grew up to work as a musician and songwriter, with a career that included performance, keyboard playing, country recordings and gospel songwriting.

Gospel songwriting
The Oak Ridge Boys’ notice says a quadruple bypass preceded what it describes as a “change of heart,” after which Golden returned his songwriting to gospel. The notice credits him with several No. 1 Southern Gospel songs and two Song of the Year awards: “What Salvation’s Done for Me,” recorded by The Booth Brothers, and “I Want to Thank You,” recorded by Karen Peck & New River. It does not specify the chart, awarding organizations or award years, so those accomplishments are best understood as the family group’s account.
A multi-generation family recording project
In March 2020, Rusty and Chris began recording with their father as William Lee Golden and The Goldens. The family released 34 songs from 2020 to 2021, according to the Oak Ridge Boys’ notice. Their brother Craig, nieces Elizabeth and Rebekah, and nephew Elijah also took part, and the family performed at the Grand Ole Opry. In a January 2023 interview, William Lee Golden also spoke about recording 34 songs with his sons. The Oak Ridge Boys’ family-project biography William Lee Golden’s 2023 interview
