But the claim that this is one-third of a “greatest WWII movie” cannot be verified without naming that comparison film and checking comparable totals. The available figures support a clear update on Nuremberg—not the headline’s ratio.
What Nuremberg has grossed
Box Office Mojo lists Nuremberg (2025) at $71,141,195 worldwide, including $14,524,694 domestic and $56,616,501 international. The Numbers reports $71,075,297 worldwide, with the same domestic total and $56,550,603 internationally. These are database totals accessed in 2026; the worldwide figures differ by $65,898, so it is best to use one source consistently rather than combine their numbers.

For a single-source figure, Box Office Mojo lists the worldwide total as $71,141,195. The Numbers reports $71,075,297. The databases agree on domestic gross.
Why the one-third claim is not established
The title does not name the “greatest WWII movie” used as the comparison. Without a specific film and its matching worldwide theatrical gross, there is no defensible way to verify that Nuremberg made one-third as much. The comparison would also need to use the same scope—such as original theatrical runs or totals including re-releases—and clarify currency, inflation treatment, and the date each total was reported.

- The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring high ranking Nazi officials answer for the Holocaust in the trial of the century, while a US Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Hermann Gring (Russell Crowe).
The reporting date matters. In January 2026, Variety reported a $46 million worldwide gross and noted that key markets had yet to open. That interim snapshot predates the roughly $71.1 million totals now listed by the box-office databases. Neither figure identifies the unnamed comparator or proves a one-third ratio.
What the film is about
Directed by James Vanderbilt, Nuremberg stars Russell Crowe as Hermann Göring and Rami Malek as U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas M. Kelley. It follows Kelley’s work assessing Nazi leaders before the Nuremberg trials. The film is based on Jack El-Hai’s 2013 nonfiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, and El-Hai helped write the screenplay, according to the Associated Press.

Historical context—and what it does not prove
TIME reports that Kelley interviewed 22 Nazi defendants to assess whether they were fit to stand trial and likely to take their own lives. The International Military Tribunal brought charges of crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy. TIME says 13 trials took place between 1945 and 1949.
That historical context helps explain the real people and proceedings behind the story, but it is not a scene-by-scene fact-check of Vanderbilt’s film. The AP likewise describes Kelley’s assignment as evaluating Göring and more than 20 other Nazi officials.

Gross is not the same as profit
The Numbers lists a $40 million production budget. Compared with that reported figure, the database’s $71,075,297 worldwide gross is about 1.8 times the budget. That is a simple comparison of theatrical revenue with production cost—not a profit calculation. The gross does not by itself account for theater shares, distribution and marketing expenses, or other revenue and costs, so it cannot establish the film’s profitability.
