He says he kept working and only learned about the old fractures roughly a decade later, after lower-leg pain led to medical imaging. The diagnosis and timing are known here through Crowe’s retrospective account, not independently confirmed medical records.
How did Russell Crowe break both legs filming Robin Hood?
In a PEOPLE interview published in February 2024 and reproduced by Yahoo Entertainment, Crowe recalled jumping from a castle portcullis during a stunt. He said the landing area was hard and uneven, although it should have had a buried pad. The crew was trying to complete the shot as daylight faded, amid a busy scene involving extras, arrows and burning pots. Crowe said he landed heels first and felt pain like an electric shock. He described the last month of the shoot as especially difficult: “There was a number of weeks where even walking was a challenge.”
Did Crowe keep filming with broken legs?
By his account, yes. Crowe said he did not tell production about the injury, take a day off, or use a cast, splints or painkillers; he continued working. “I never discussed the injury with production, never took a day off because of it, I just kept going to work,” he said in the PEOPLE interview. The Guardian also reported that he did not see a doctor at the time. The Guardian’s February 20, 2024 account recaps his recollection.

When did Crowe learn about the fractures?
Crowe said that roughly ten years after the shoot, unusual lower-leg pain prompted him to visit a doctor. He recalled that the doctor reviewed an MRI and X-rays, saw remnants of fractures in both shin bones, and estimated that they might date back about a decade. Crowe said that estimate brought the portcullis jump to mind.
His brief retrospective summary was: “Apparently I finished that movie with two broken legs.” The wording matters: this is Crowe reporting what he remembers a doctor telling him, not a diagnosis verified through medical records or a direct statement from that doctor.
