Russell Brand faces seven criminal charges: three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault and one allegation of indecent assault. The Metropolitan Police announced five charges on 4 April 2025; the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced two further charges on 23 December 2025. News reports published on 6 October 2026 said Brand had pleaded not guilty and that his trial was due to begin at Southwark Crown Court on 12 October 2026. A charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt.
What has Russell Brand been charged with?
The charges concern alleged offences reported by seven women. The police and CPS announcements describe the offences and alleged dates; they do not establish that the conduct occurred.

The CPS said it authorised the initial charges after reviewing evidence, and announced the further charges following a Metropolitan Police investigation. The CPS explains that it decides whether the evidence is sufficient and prosecution is in the public interest; it does not decide whether a defendant is guilty. See its 4 April 2025 announcement.
When were the charges announced?
Investigation and initial charges
The Metropolitan Police said detectives began investigating in September 2023 after receiving allegations following reporting by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times. On 4 April 2025, police announced the five initial charges. The announcement describes the investigation and allegations; it is not a determination of their truth.

Has Russell Brand pleaded guilty?
No. ITV and The Independent reported on 6 October 2026 that Brand had pleaded not guilty to the charges. ITV also reported that the two sets of charges had been joined. These details are attributed to news accounts of court proceedings, not an official court transcript. See ITV’s 6 October report and The Independent’s report.

When is the trial?
ITV reported that Brand attended a pre-trial hearing at Southwark Crown Court on 6 October 2026 and that the trial was due to begin on 12 October, with a reported duration of up to ten weeks. The scheduled start date is time-sensitive; the latest cited court-status reports are dated 6 October 2026, and a schedule can change. ITV had previously reported in March 2026 that the trial had been delayed until October: ITV, 30 March 2026.

These are active criminal proceedings. The CPS says a defendant has the right to a fair trial and cautions against reporting, commentary or online sharing that could prejudice the case. The charge announcements and court reports should therefore be understood as allegations and procedural updates, not proof of guilt.
