News reports published on 24 February 2026 said she had been diagnosed with cancer; The Guardian identified it as throat cancer. Those reports do not provide a formal cause-of-death statement.
Who was Maxi Shield?
Shield was a veteran of Sydney’s drag scene whose performance career spanned more than 25 years, according to ABC News. Her appearance on season one of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under introduced her to a much wider audience. The Guardian also reported that she performed in the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Her work remained closely connected to Sydney venues and community life. That local presence, alongside her television appearance, helps explain why tributes followed from both the drag world and the city’s LGBTQIA+ community.
What happened to Maxi Shield?
ABC reported that Shield had been diagnosed with cancer in August 2025 and had undergone radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The Guardian described the diagnosis as throat cancer. The reports establish that she had cancer and received treatment; they do not establish a medically confirmed cause of death.

The exact date of her death is also not settled by the published accounts. E! Online reported on 23 February 2026 that Universal Sydney’s licensee had shared an announcement the previous day; those dates refer to the announcement and publication, not an independently confirmed date of death. ABC and The Guardian published their reports on 24 February.
Tributes from the drag and LGBTQIA+ communities
Jesse Matheson, chief executive of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, told ABC: “Maxi Shield was an incredible queen, a beautiful human being, and a true friend.” Dillon Shaw, licensee of Universal Sydney, remembered her as “a big personality with a heart of gold” and said he was heartbroken that he would not share another lunch and laugh with his friend.

Shield’s career connected decades of Sydney performance with an international television audience. In a 2018 interview with triple j quoted by ABC, she encouraged people of every sexuality to try drag for fun. Her performances, generosity and presence in the community were central themes in the tributes after her death.
