Running Point is a fictional Netflix comedy about family power and professional basketball. Kate Hudson plays Isla Gordon, a former party girl unexpectedly placed in charge of her family’s Los Angeles Waves franchise. Inspired in part by the real-world experience of Lakers executive Jeanie Buss—but not a true story—the series turns ownership politics, sibling rivalry, workplace bias, and sports-business pressure into an ongoing ensemble comedy.

Running Point is a fictional Netflix workplace comedy about family power, professional basketball, and an unexpectedly capable executive. Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, a former party girl who is abruptly put in charge of the Los Angeles Waves, the professional basketball franchise owned by her family. What begins as a succession crisis becomes a story about gender bias, nepotism, leadership, addiction, sibling rivalry, and the difference between controlling a sports empire and actually running one.

The series is not a documentary or a literal account of the Los Angeles Lakers. However, its premise was partly inspired by Lakers president and controlling owner Jeanie Buss, who is also an executive producer. The fictional LA Waves give creators Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen room to heighten the family dysfunction, league politics, workplace absurdity, and emotional stakes.

Availability: Both seasons of Running Point are available on Netflix in the United States as of the research date, August 12, 2026. Availability and subscription terms can vary by country and change over time. See where to watch Running Point below.

What is Running Point about?

The show follows the Gordon family, which controls the high-profile Los Angeles Waves basketball organization. When Cam Gordon, the team’s eldest sibling and president, is forced to step down and enter rehabilitation, he does not hand the job to one of his brothers. Instead, he appoints Isla Gordon, a sister whom nearly everyone around the team underestimates.

Isla is not an outsider with no relevant experience. She has worked in the front office and understands the business, but her reputation as a former party girl makes the board, players, sponsors, staff, and her own family question whether she belongs in the top job. Her challenge is therefore more complicated than learning the basics of basketball administration. She must persuade people that her past does not disqualify her from making difficult decisions in the present.

Her closest ally is Ali Lee, the Waves’ chief of staff and Isla’s best friend. Around them are Isla’s competing brothers, executives, coaches, players, agents, sponsors, and other people with an interest in who controls the franchise. The family becomes even more complicated when Jackie Moreno appears as a previously unknown younger half-brother.

The result is a workplace comedy with a sports-business setting rather than a traditional on-court sports drama. Games matter, but so do ownership meetings, contracts, public relations, locker-room relationships, league politics, family loyalty, and the constant pressure to keep a valuable franchise successful.

Is Running Point based on a true story?

No. Running Point is fictional, although its central idea has a real-world inspiration. Jeanie Buss’s experience as president and controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers helped inspire the series. Buss approached Mindy Kaling with the idea several years before the show reached Netflix, and she became an executive producer alongside Lakers executive Linda Rambis.

That connection makes the show unusually informed by the world of professional basketball ownership. Netflix’s reporting indicates that Buss and her team advised the production about basketball operations, agents, league politics, and executive egos. Even so, the LA Waves are not the Lakers, the Gordon family is not a disguised biography of the Buss family, and Isla Gordon is not a direct fictional version of Jeanie Buss.

Running Point uses recognizable elements of a professional sports organization, then reshapes them for serialized comedy. Viewers looking for a documentary-level account of NBA front-office work should treat the basketball-business details as dramatized rather than definitive.

Season 1 explained

Season 1 premiered on Netflix on February 27, 2025, with 10 episodes. Its main question is whether Isla can earn the authority that her family has given her before the Waves’ board, players, and business partners take it away.

Cam’s departure creates the immediate vacancy, but his decision to choose Isla over brothers Ness and Sandy turns the vacancy into a family contest. Isla has to manage people who believe she received the job because of family circumstances rather than ability. She also has to deal with the public image created by her earlier life, which becomes a convenient reason for others to dismiss her judgment.

Season 1’s story combines several kinds of conflict:

  • Succession: Isla’s appointment destabilizes the Gordon family’s informal hierarchy.
  • Gender and credibility: Isla must repeatedly prove that she can make executive decisions in a male-dominated sports environment.
  • Workplace politics: The board, staff, sponsors, players, agents, and family members all want different things from the franchise.
  • Personal reinvention: Isla must separate her current abilities from the reputation she developed as a party girl.
  • Family secrets: Jackie’s arrival changes the emotional and political balance inside the Gordon family.

Over the season, Isla leads the Waves to their strongest season yet and reaches Game 7 of the playoffs. The team ultimately loses, so the ending is not a simple victory story. Isla has demonstrated that she can lead, but she has not eliminated the people who want her to fail.

Season 1 ending spoiler: The final scene reveals that Cam has left rehab early and returned to Isla’s office. His return threatens the authority Isla has just established and provides the direct setup for Season 2.

Season 2 explained

Season 2 premiered on April 23, 2026. If Season 1 is an accession story—Isla proving that she deserves the job—Season 2 is a consolidation story. Isla has earned control of the Waves, but now she has to defend it against an internal threat while dealing with new sporting and financial problems.

Cam returns from rehab early and says that he does not want his former position back. He presents himself as a consultant, apparently offering experience without directly challenging Isla. The season gradually makes clear that his intentions are more aggressive: he is attempting to undermine her from within the organization.

The second season expands the series beyond the original family succession dispute. Its major storylines include:

  • the Waves adjusting to a new coach, Norm, played by Ray Romano;
  • Jay Brown’s departure and the consequences for the franchise;
  • money problems that put additional pressure on the organization;
  • a strike involving the LA Waves City Dancers;
  • locker-room conflict between Travis Bugg and Dyson Gibbs;
  • star player Marcus Winfield’s resistance to the new coach;
  • and a major contest against Jay Brown’s Boston team.

These plots allow the show to examine more of the sports organization than the owner’s office. The Waves are presented as an ecosystem in which players, coaches, performers, executives, employees, and owners all have different forms of leverage. That broader focus also gives the comedy more room to move beyond Isla’s immediate family.

Season 2 finale spoilers: The finale reveals that Cam has been faking drug tests. Jackie exposes him, and Isla retains control of the Waves. The team then wins the championship, giving Isla the major sporting success that eluded her in Season 1.

The victory does not close the story. Cam announces that he is reviving the former LA Industry team, and Jay Brown signs on as its coach. The ending shifts the show’s likely next conflict from a battle over control inside one family to a rivalry between two Los Angeles franchises.

Season 3: renewal and release date

Netflix officially renewed Running Point for Season 3 on May 13, 2026. As of August 12, 2026, Netflix had not announced a Season 3 premiere date or a complete cast list.

The confirmed direction is that Isla will continue dealing with the power struggles and personal pressure of running the Waves. Cam’s revived LA Industry team, with Jay Brown as coach, creates an obvious new source of competition. That rivalry could place the Gordon family’s personal conflict directly on the basketball court and in the Los Angeles sports market.

Any specific release date, episode count, new casting information, or plot details beyond that setup should be treated as unconfirmed until Netflix announces them.

Cast and characters

Kate Hudson leads the series as Isla Gordon. Isla is written as emotionally messy, commercially capable, funny, and more resilient than the people around her expect. Hudson’s performance supplies both the show’s broad workplace-comedy energy and its more serious leadership story.

The principal ensemble includes:

  • Drew Tarver
  • Scott MacArthur
  • Justin Theroux
  • Brenda Song
  • Fabrizio Guido
  • Jay Ellis
  • Max Greenfield
  • Chet Hanks
  • Toby Sandeman

Ali Lee, Isla’s best friend and chief of staff, is particularly important to the show’s workplace structure. Jackie Moreno’s arrival adds another family relationship to an already unstable power network. Season 2 also features Ray Romano as coach Norm, along with additional guest appearances documented in Netflix’s promotional coverage.

What makes the show work?

Kate Hudson’s return to workplace comedy

Hudson is the show’s main comedic and dramatic engine. Isla can be impulsive and socially awkward while still understanding business, people, and the stakes of the Waves’ decisions. That combination prevents her from becoming either a flawless executive fantasy or a completely incompetent sitcom boss.

A sports workplace rather than a sports documentary

The series is most interested in the human machinery around a team. Ownership, sponsorships, agents, coaches, public image, internal politics, and employment disputes all become sources of comedy and conflict. Basketball provides the pressure system, but the story is fundamentally about who gets to make decisions and who is expected to accept them.

Family succession as satire

The Gordon family gives the show a way to dramatize nepotism, inheritance, loyalty, and resentment. Isla’s position is both privileged and precarious: she has access because she is family, yet that same family repeatedly questions her legitimacy. The series asks whether competence can overcome inherited assumptions—or whether every success will be treated as evidence that the family made the right gamble.

An accessible serialized structure

Running Point is not built as a dense, highly intricate prestige drama. Its plot turns are generally easy to follow, and its episodes balance continuing storylines with workplace-comedy situations. That makes it a straightforward recommendation for viewers who enjoy ensemble comedies with an ongoing emotional and professional arc.

Reception and audience response

Critical response has been broadly positive but not unanimous. At the time of the research review, Rotten Tomatoes listed Season 1 at 79% from critics and Season 2 at 91% from 11 critic reviews. Aggregator scores change as additional reviews are added, so these figures should be checked again before publication.

Reviews of Season 2 commonly praised the ensemble chemistry, Hudson’s central performance, and the show’s relaxed comedic rhythm. The reservations were that some plotting can feel predictable or crowded, and that the series may begin to resemble a conventional late-stage sitcom as it adds more storylines and complications.

Netflix reported 36 million views for Running Point in its first-quarter 2025 shareholder letter. Netflix’s “views” figure is a company-defined engagement measure. It should not be treated as identical to unique viewers, broadcast ratings, or a directly comparable theatrical box-office number.

Where to watch Running Point

Netflix is the primary streaming home for both seasons in the United States, and Netflix’s official title listing includes downloadable viewing. Territory availability, plan requirements, and pricing can change, so viewers outside the United States should check their local Netflix catalog. If you are comparing services, start with this guide to where to watch Running Point rather than assuming that the U.S. listing applies everywhere.

There is no need to watch a separate film, documentary, or Lakers program before beginning the series. The Jeanie Buss connection is useful context, but Running Point stands on its own as a fictional comedy.

Is Running Point worth watching?

It is a good fit if you like ensemble workplace comedies, sports-business stories, sibling chaos, and accessible serialized television. The series offers a distinctive setting, a strong central performance from Kate Hudson, and enough continuing family conflict to give the workplace jokes consequences.

It is a less obvious choice for viewers who want strict realism about professional basketball operations, detailed tactical coverage of games, or highly intricate prestige-drama plotting. The show uses the basketball world as a comic workplace and a metaphor for power; it is not trying to function as an authoritative account of how a real franchise operates.
