Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream in Docker with FFmpeg and a Video Playlist

A technically cautious guide to YouTube livestream readiness, FFmpeg playlist compatibility, ingest protocols, Docker operation, testing, and recovery.

You can run an ordered playlist as a continuous YouTube live feed from FFmpeg inside a Docker container, but a loop flag alone does not make a stream reliable. You need a livestream-eligible channel, compatible media, the correct YouTube ingest URL and protected stream key, plus a way to check the feed and recover the process. The exact FFmpeg command and Docker configuration depend on your files, FFmpeg build, and chosen ingest protocol; the steps below help you configure and test the setup without pretending there is one verified command for every deployment.

What the setup needs to do

The pipeline has four parts: YouTube accepts an encoder feed, FFmpeg reads the playlist and sends audio/video, Docker makes the media and required configuration available to the process, and an operator monitors both the process and the received stream. These are separate concerns: a running container does not prove that YouTube is receiving valid frames, and a YouTube broadcast is not the same resource as the persistent feed carrying it.

Google’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream resource, which holds feed and ingest settings, from a liveBroadcast resource, which represents the event viewers watch. Its broadcast guide uses a 24/7 feed as an example of reusing a stream resource. A process restart therefore does not inherently mean you must create a new stream resource; follow the current Live Control Room or API state for the broadcast you intend to run. See LiveStreams and Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Prepare YouTube before starting FFmpeg

Check channel eligibility

YouTube Help says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before building the pipeline; account eligibility and interface details can change. YouTube also recommends test streams and checking the preview before going live. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Get the ingest destination and protect the key

Select or create the stream in YouTube Studio or through the Live API, then copy the matching ingest URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as the credential that identifies the creator and stream. Treat the key like a password: do not bake it into a public container image, commit it in a Compose file or repository, print it in logs, or include it in a support request. YouTube Help says a custom stream key can be reused. See Manage live stream settings.

Make sure the encoder’s output protocol and URL format match the stream settings. YouTube’s API lists RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest types and documents primary and backup addresses and stream names; these are not interchangeable URL forms. Consult the stream’s current settings and the selected protocol’s documentation rather than assuming one output URL works for all of them.

Choose an ingest protocol

Protocol When it may fit Important constraints
RTMPS A conventional encoder feed where lower latency matters. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over SSL and a good choice for ordinary content where low latency is needed. Use a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and connect over port 443. Confirm your FFmpeg build and output path support the required protocol.
HLS A segment-based ingest path when the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements and its latency characteristics suit the use. Requires muxed audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and segments no longer than 5 seconds. YouTube recommends 1–4-second segments; smaller segments can lower latency but may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency. HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC.
DASH Another ingest type listed by YouTube’s API; consider it only when your encoder and workflow support the relevant YouTube configuration. Do not assume it uses the same URL structure or command as RTMPS or HLS; consult the current API and encoder documentation.

For many ordinary feeds where latency matters, RTMPS is the simpler starting point if your encoder supports it. YouTube’s HLS requirements are more specific. A local playlist ending in .m3u8 is an input format, not a reason by itself to publish to YouTube using HLS: playlist input and output ingest protocol are separate decisions. See Google’s HLS ingestion guide and LiveStreams API reference.

Build and validate the video playlist

How FFmpeg’s concat demuxer works

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file containing one file directive per media input and presents the files in sequence as though their packets had been muxed together. If you use the optional format header, the first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0. The demuxer adjusts timestamps so each input follows the preceding one, but mismatched audio and video lengths can leave gaps. Inaccurate or unknown duration estimates can cause timestamp artifacts; a duration directive in the list can supply a known duration where needed. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check every file, not just the first

Packet-level concatenation depends on all inputs having the same streams, codecs, and time bases. In practice, files exported from different cameras or editing tools may also vary in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or other properties relevant to the chosen output. Inspect and normalize the entire collection before relying on an unattended sequence. If the files do not meet concat-demuxer compatibility requirements, use an appropriate normalization/re-encode or a filter-based workflow; the exact method depends on the media and is not a universal drop-in command.

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an infinite loop for one input. That option is not, by itself, a verified recipe for concatenating a playlist and publishing it from Docker. Option ordering, timestamps, encoding, and output URL syntax depend on the actual inputs, output protocol, and installed FFmpeg build. Consult the FFmpeg command documentation and verify available options locally.

Make the playlist and FFmpeg available inside Docker

At a conceptual level, the container must be able to read the playlist and all referenced media files, reach the selected YouTube ingest endpoint over the network, and receive the stream credential without exposing it. A mounted directory or volume is a common way to provide persistent media, but choose and verify the exact Docker configuration for your host and deployment. The reviewed YouTube and FFmpeg references do not establish a specific Docker image, Compose file, restart-policy syntax, resource requirement, or end-to-end publishing command, so do not copy an unverified template into production.

Before launch, check the installed FFmpeg version and local help for the required demuxer, encoders, and output protocol. Documentation and builds can differ; a feature described in current FFmpeg documentation may not exist in an older image. Keep the secret key outside version-controlled configuration and avoid logging the expanded output URL if it contains the key.

Test the feed before leaving it unattended

  1. Verify eligibility: confirm livestream access in YouTube Studio and select the intended stream/broadcast configuration.
  2. Validate the media list: confirm every file is present, ordered correctly, readable by the container, and compatible for the concat method you chose. Check duration metadata where timestamp continuity matters.
  3. Confirm the encoder path: inspect the installed FFmpeg build and ensure the chosen input, codec, and YouTube output protocol are supported. Match the ingest URL and key to the selected stream.
  4. Run a short private or unlisted test: start the feed and inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Check that video appears, audio is present and clean, and transitions between playlist items work as expected.
  5. Monitor quality and operation: watch for frozen or stale frames, missing audio, timestamp issues, and network or process failures. YouTube recommends previewing and continuing to monitor stream audio/video quality.
  6. Test recovery separately: determine what happens if FFmpeg exits, the host loses network access, or YouTube stops receiving the feed. A container restart may restart a stopped process, but it cannot fix a revoked key, incompatible files, or a feed YouTube is not accepting.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Practical next check
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Channel eligibility, wrong stream selection, mismatched ingest URL/key, unsupported protocol, or blocked outbound connectivity. Check Live Control Room status and selected stream settings; verify the protocol-specific endpoint, credential handling, FFmpeg output support, and host network path.
Container starts but cannot open playlist files The playlist or media is not available at the paths FFmpeg sees inside the container. Check the container’s mounted/volume paths and confirm every playlist reference resolves from within the container.
Playlist stops or transitions produce gaps/artifacts Missing or inaccurate durations, incompatible streams/codecs/time bases, or differences in audio/video lengths. Inspect every input; correct duration metadata where appropriate and normalize incompatible files or use another concatenation approach.
Video arrives but quality is poor or audio is absent Input/output codec handling, mismatched media properties, or YouTube’s received feed rather than merely the local process state. Inspect the YouTube preview and audio/video quality, then verify the actual files and encoder output configuration.
The stream ends after a process or network failure Recovery and monitoring are not configured or the underlying cause persists. Check container and host health, connectivity, and credential validity; establish alerting and a restart or escalation plan. A process restart is not proof that the feed recovered.

A 24/7 target is an operating plan, not a guarantee supplied by a loop option. Host, power, network, file, process, and platform failures remain possible; decide who or what detects a failure and what happens next.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain Docker and an always-on host, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; cards are accepted worldwide. Start the free first day.
