RTSP controls a streaming session; RTP carries real-time audio and video. They are not interchangeable alternatives: an RTSP session can use RTP to deliver its media. That distinction explains why RTSP handles requests such as PLAY and PAUSE, while RTP provides functions such as timestamps and sequence numbers.
What is the difference between RTSP and RTP?

Think of RTSP as the session controller and RTP as the media transport. A client can use RTSP to ask a server to begin playback, while RTP carries the stream. The two protocols therefore work together rather than competing to do the same job.
Does RTSP carry video?
RTSP defines session setup and control; it does not necessarily carry all media inside its control messages. Media can travel by a distinct mechanism such as RTP. However, RTSP 2.0 also permits RTP to be interleaved over the RTSP connection, so it is not accurate to say media can never share that connection.
What does RTP do while carrying media?
RTP supplies functions useful for real-time delivery. RFC 3550 identifies payload-type identification, sequence numbering, timestamping, and delivery monitoring among them. These help recipients interpret media packets and their order and timing.

RTP does not reserve network resources or guarantee quality of service. Using RTP alone therefore does not promise low latency, perfect delivery, or uninterrupted playback; actual results depend on the network and the implementation.
How do RTSP and RTP work together?
- Set up and control the session: An RTSP client establishes delivery context and can issue playback requests such as
PLAYandPAUSE. - Deliver the media: The session can use RTP to carry real-time audio or video. RTSP 2.0 describes media delivery using RTP over UDP, TCP, or the RTSP connection.
- Monitor delivery: RTCP is associated with RTP. RFC 3550 describes RTCP as a way to monitor delivery quality and convey participant information; for RTP use with RTSP 2.0, RFC 7826 says RTCP should be used.
RTSP messages and the media path are related but distinct roles. The chosen transport and how monitoring, synchronization, security, and recovery work depend on the particular client and server.

Is RTP the same as RTSP?
No. RTP transports real-time media; RTSP establishes and controls a delivery session. A system may use both, but support for one does not establish that a device supports the other or that two products will interoperate.
What should you check when choosing an RTSP implementation?
- Version and methods: Confirm that client and server support compatible RTSP versions and the methods your workflow needs.
- Media transport options: Check which media-delivery protocols and transports both sides support.
- Network path: Verify that the required RTP and RTCP traffic can pass through the actual network and firewall.
- Operational behavior: Review the specific implementation’s monitoring, synchronization, security, and recovery behavior rather than assuming all RTSP/RTP systems work alike.
RTSP 1.0 and 2.0: an important compatibility caveat
RFC 7826 defines RTSP 2.0. Published in December 2016, it obsoletes RFC 2326, the RTSP 1.0 specification published in April 1998. RFC 7826 states that RTSP 2.0 is not backwards compatible with RTSP 1.0 except for basic version negotiation. A product described simply as “RTSP” should not be assumed to implement version 2.0; check its documentation.

In the RTSP 2.0 specification, TCP and TLS over TCP are mandatory for RTSP messages. That specification detail does not mean every device labeled RTSP implements version 2.0, nor does it establish which media transports a particular product supports.
