Roy Thomas Baker, the British producer and engineer associated with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and The Cars’ first four albums, died on April 12, 2025, aged 78. Reports placed his death at his home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona; they did not establish or disclose a cause.

Who was Roy Thomas Baker?

Born in Hampstead, London, on November 10, 1946, Baker entered the music business at 14. He began in studio engineering, working at Decca and later Trident in London, before moving into production. His early work also included assisting producers Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti and work on records by David Bowie, The Who and The Rolling Stones.

At Trident, Baker co-founded the label Neptune and became involved in Queen’s early career. His work crossed rock, new wave, metal and pop, and included production, engineering and A&R roles; those credits were not all the same kind of contribution.

What Queen albums did Roy Thomas Baker produce?

Baker worked on five Queen albums, spanning the band’s debut through its 1978 release Jazz:

The Guardian reported that Baker heard a demo of “Keep Yourself Alive,” thought it “fabulous and wonderful,” and persuaded Trident to sign Queen to a recording, publishing and management deal in 1972. He produced the band’s 1973 debut and worked with Queen through its first four albums, before reuniting with the group for Jazz.

His role in “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Yes. Baker was part of the production team behind “Bohemian Rhapsody,” alongside engineer Mike Stone. Queen guitarist Brian May, in a tribute reproduced by the Official International Queen Fan Club, credited Baker’s major contribution to the band’s early production and specifically recognized his and Stone’s work on the song. That credit does not mean Baker alone created Queen’s sound.

The recording’s elaborate construction was a contrast to the more concise new-wave records Baker would later make with The Cars. In a 1983 book interview reproduced by the Guardian, Baker recalled that the backing track took two days, the opera section seven days of long singing sessions, and the song about three weeks overall. The Guardian reported 160 vocal-overdub tracks. Baker described its genre-spanning character as part of what made the song distinctive.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart in 1975, according to Official Charts. It returned to the top in 1991 as a double A-side with “These Are the Days of Our Lives.”

What Cars albums did Roy Thomas Baker produce?

Baker produced The Cars’ first four albums:

  • The Cars
  • Candy-O
  • Panorama
  • Shake It Up

The Guardian reported that Baker took the band to London to record its debut at AIR Studios, and that the album sold six million copies in the United States. The same report said he produced three more US top-10 albums for the group. Mix reported that the four albums’ combined certification reached 13-times platinum; that certification figure is a different measure from the Guardian’s reported sales total for the debut.

Accounts of the Cars records describe a more scaled-down sound than Queen’s expansive vocal and operatic arrangements, with quirky electronics, eighth-note rhythms and polished, concise songs. The Guardian also noted the massed harmonies Baker added to “Good Times Roll.”
