Rowan Atkinson, the actor who played Mr Bean, reportedly claimed £910,000 to repair his McLaren F1 after a crash in August 2011. ITV News described it in 2013 as believed to be Britain’s highest recorded car-repair claim at the time—not as a proven all-time record across every kind of insurance claim.
What happened to Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1?
Atkinson crashed his McLaren F1 in August 2011. A February 2013 report by ITV News said he successfully claimed £910,000 for repairs and that the work took about a year. Mr Bean is a fictional character; Atkinson was the person involved in the real accident.
Was it one of the biggest car insurance claims ever?
It was reported as an unusually large UK claim for repairing a car. ITV News said the bill was believed to be the highest ever recorded in Britain, while a 2015 ITV News London report called it thought to be the biggest single car insurance claim. Those descriptions are attributed contemporary reporting, not confirmation from a comprehensive insurer database.
The reports do not establish that it was the largest insurance claim of any type, the largest worldwide, or the current UK record. The careful answer is that it was reported as Britain’s largest car-repair claim at the time—not that Atkinson definitively holds an all-time insurance record.

Why was the repair so costly?
The McLaren F1 is a specialized road car. Christie’s catalogue documentation describes the model as having a BMW V12 engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, a carbon-fibre composite body and a central driving position. These features provide context for the car’s unusual construction, but the catalogue does not document damage to Atkinson’s particular car or explain how its repair bill was calculated.
What happened to the car afterward?
ITV News London reported in June 2015 that Atkinson sold the McLaren F1 for £8 million. That is a reported sale price; it should not be taken as evidence that the crash or repair increased the car’s value, or as a general valuation for McLaren F1s.
