Rosie O’Donnell said she moved to Ireland on January 15, 2025. She has not announced a date to move back to the United States: her latest reported statement, on September 26, 2026, was that she would return “as soon as [Mr Trump’s] out.” A private two-week New York visit in early 2026 was temporary, not a reported relocation back to the U.S.
When did Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland?
O’Donnell announced on January 15, 2025, that she had moved to Ireland with her youngest child, Clay, also identified as Dakota in ABC News’ March 2025 report. She said the move was a decision she had not expected to make, but believed was best for herself and her child. ABC News reported her announcement and explanation.
In March 2025, she described political and personal circumstances as part of her decision. She also said she missed her older children, friends and aspects of her former life while trying to make a home in Ireland. Her stated condition for considering a return then was: “When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.” That was O’Donnell’s view, not an independent assessment of conditions in the U.S.
Is Rosie O’Donnell returning to the United States?
She has expressed a willingness to return, but has not announced a fixed date or confirmed that she has moved back. On The Late Late Show, as reported by Extra.ie on September 26, 2026, she said she would go back “as soon as [Mr Trump’s] out.” This is her latest reported return statement in the cited coverage; it is a political condition, not a calendar date or confirmation of a move. ABC News reported in March 2025 that O’Donnell was seeking Irish citizenship through her grandparents. An April 17, 2025, profile in The Irish Times said her application had not yet been approved at that time. Those reports do not establish whether she later received citizenship, so her current application status should not be inferred from them. The Irish Times profile.
