Barr recounted the story in a June 23, 2025, interview on Bunnie XO’s Dumb Blonde podcast. She said her daughter knew her birth mother was a famous Jewish woman in Hollywood and thought she resembled Hawn. The account is Barr’s recollection, not independent confirmation of every private detail.
Why did Roseanne Barr’s daughter think Goldie Hawn was her mother?
On Dumb Blonde, Barr said her daughter knew only that her biological mother was famous in Hollywood and Jewish. Barr recalled: “She, all she knew was that her mother was famous in Hollywood. And Jewish. And so she thought it was Goldie Hawn was her mom because she looked just like Goldie Hawn.”

Barr also said her daughter was excited when the National Enquirer contacted her, expecting the disclosure to identify Hawn. “And she’s all excited thinking it’s going to be Goldie Hawn,” Barr said. The story is a striking misunderstanding Barr described years after the events; the interview does not independently establish what her daughter knew or thought at the time.
What did Barr say about the adoption and reunion?
The adoption
Barr said she was 17 when she gave birth, kept her daughter for a week, and then placed her with Jewish Family and Children Services in Denver. Recalling the agency, she said, “And I gave her up to Jewish Family and Children’s Services there in Denver.” Barr said she kept the name Roseanne Barr in part because she expected to become famous and hoped her daughter could find her.

The disclosure and meeting
Barr said the National Enquirer eventually told her daughter that Barr was her birth mother. She recalled that her daughter, Brandi, then met Barr and her adoptive mother, describing the first encounter as emotional. Us Weekly’s June 23, 2025 recap says the reunion took place about 17½ years after the adoption and that Brandi was 53 when Barr discussed the story in 2025. Those ages and dates are reported biographical details, not independent documentation of the adoption or reunion.
What is known about how the National Enquirer learned the story?
Barr said in the 2025 interview that Tom Arnold told the National Enquirer. The account of how the tabloid learned about the adoption has a contested history: a December 1990 Vanity Fair profile records disputed claims about an intermediary and says Barr and Arnold denied one assertion. The two accounts should not be collapsed into a single settled explanation. Barr’s later interview is the source for her version; the older profile documents that the circumstances were disputed at the time.

What the interview does—and does not—establish
The podcast conversation is a later telling of a personal history, not a newly discovered adoption record. The episode transcript provides the wording attributed to Barr, while the transcript is a third-party record of the interview. Us Weekly also reports on the same conversation, so it is a recap rather than an independent witness to the events. The central claim—that her daughter once thought Hawn could be her birth mother—should therefore remain attributed to Barr.
