Ronnie and Donnie Galyon, conjoined twins from Dayton, Ohio, died on 4 July 2020 at 68 years and 253 days old. Guinness World Records identifies them as the oldest conjoined twins ever recorded and reports that they died of heart failure. Their record is a measure of their longevity, not a description of the full lives they led—from decades on the road to later years supported at home by family and their community.

Who were Ronnie and Donnie Galyon?

The brothers were born in Dayton, Ohio, on 25 October 1951. Guinness World Records says they were joined at the abdomen and pelvis. They spent their first two years in hospital, where doctors concluded that separating them could not be done safely.

According to Guinness, each brother had his own heart, stomach, liver, lungs, kidneys, arms and legs, while they shared portions of their urinary and lower digestive tracts. This is the description given in Guinness’s feature; it should not be taken as a more detailed clinical account than that source provides.

How did they become the oldest conjoined twins on record?

Ronnie and Donnie surpassed Chang and Eng Bunker’s age in July 2014. When the Galyons turned 63 that October, Guinness recognized them as the oldest conjoined twins ever. Guinness’s record entry gives their age at death as 68 years and 253 days.

That historical longevity record is different from a record for the oldest living conjoined twins at a particular moment. The Galyons should also not be confused with Lori and George Schappell, another pair of conjoined twins who died in 2024 at age 62.

What were their lives like beyond the record?

Decades touring

Guinness reports that financial pressure and local schools’ refusal to provide the twins with a formal education shaped the family’s next steps. Their father began taking them on the road when they were seven. For about three decades, the brothers toured circuses, sideshows and fairground carnivals in the United States, Canada and Latin America.

Retirement and family support

They retired in 1991 and bought a home in Dayton. For the next two decades, they lived independently with support from their younger brother Jim and his wife, Mary.

In 2009, Ronnie was hospitalized after a viral infection led to a life-threatening blood clot in his lungs. Guinness says the brothers needed round-the-clock care afterward. Community donations and volunteers helped build an accessible extension at Jim and Mary’s home, where Ronnie and Donnie spent the rest of their lives.

What did Donnie say about being conjoined?

In the Guinness feature, Donnie is quoted as saying: “We were born this way by God and we are happy the way we are.” The statement reflects Donnie’s words as reproduced by Guinness; it was not a comment made at the time of the brothers’ deaths.

What does Guinness say about conjoined twins generally?

Guinness World Records gives an estimate of once in every 50,000 pregnancies for the occurrence of conjoined twins, and says around 70% of conjoined twin births are female. These are general figures reported by Guinness, not statistics specific to Ronnie and Donnie. The same feature says a large majority of conjoined twins are stillborn or die within a day, without giving a precise percentage.
