For romance movies based on true stories, start with The Vow, The Theory of Everything and Bright Star. Each has an explicitly stated real-life basis, though the films make different claims: one is inspired by a true story, one adapts a named memoir, and one is based on a documented historical love story. A Beautiful Mind is a related relationship-centered biographical drama, rather than a romance-first pick.
What “based on a true story” means for these films
A film can draw on real people without being a documentary or a scene-by-scene record. The official descriptions here use distinct language: “inspired by a true story,” “based on” a memoir, and “based on the true story” of a couple’s love. Those distinctions matter if you want a true story love story movie with a clearly identified source account.
Romance movies based on real events
The Vow (2012)
Sony describes The Vow as a romance inspired by a true story: “Inspired by a true story, The Vow is the tale of a love that refuses to be forgotten.” The official synopsis does not identify the real couple, so the film’s real-life inspiration should not be assigned specific names on the basis of that description alone. The Theory of Everything (2014)
This relationship-centered biographical romance-drama follows Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde. Focus Features identifies Jane Hawking’s memoir, Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, as the film’s source: “The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking, and is directed by Academy Award® winner James Marsh (Man on Wire).” Jane Hawking’s memoir offers a directly connected companion account for viewers who want to read beyond the film. Bright Star (2009)
Jane Campion’s period romance tells the love story of poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne. Sony calls it “an extraordinary film based on the true story of undying love” between the two. Of these selections, it is the clearest fit if you want a historical romance whose official description names both real people at its center. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s official page
A relationship-centered biographical drama to consider
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
A Beautiful Mind is inspired by events in the life of mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr., according to Amblin. It includes an important relationship, but its framing is a biographical drama about Nash, not a romance-first story. Sylvia Nasar’s biography is a connected source for viewers interested in the life behind the film. Amblin’s official page
