The clearest reader-voted list is Rolling Stone Germany’s 2024 selection of 30 covers from its first 30 years; the U.S. magazine’s most historically significant covers include its first issue and its 1981 John Lennon tribute. Those are different kinds of recognition, so they should not be treated as one ranking.
What “hottest” means in Rolling Stone cover lists
“Hottest” is not a formal category in the available lists. It might mean visually striking, famous, provocative or culturally consequential. The distinctions matter: a reader vote records audience preference, while a retrospective highlights historical significance. The German edition’s poll is also separate from the U.S. magazine’s history.
Rolling Stone Germany’s 30 reader-voted covers
On December 6, 2024, Rolling Stone Germany published a reader-voted ranking of 30 covers from the German edition’s first 30 years. The magazine said that period included 360 covers; the 30 entries are the published ranking, not the number of covers put to a vote. Covers from 2024 were excluded. The list includes Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Sade, Bruce Springsteen, John and Yoko, Madonna, Barack Obama, the Beastie Boys, Kate Bush, AC/DC, Eminem, Amy Winehouse, Lemmy, Keith Richards and the Muppets. Rolling Stone Germany’s 2024 ranking
This is the strongest basis for a reader-voted answer to “Which Rolling Stone covers are the best?”—with the qualification that it represents one national edition and a defined period, not the global magazine or every cover it has published.

Two landmark covers in the U.S. magazine’s history
The first issue: John Lennon, November 9, 1967
The first U.S. issue, published November 9, 1967, featured John Lennon in a publicity still from How I Won the War. Rolling Stone Philippines’ historical account quotes founder Jann Wenner describing the choice: “It was the best thing we had,” and “It was incredibly fortuitous, symbolic and prophetic of the future.” The account attributes the remarks to Wenner in a Rolling Stone 50th-anniversary feature. John Lennon and Yoko Ono: January 22, 1981
The January 22, 1981 issue was a tribute to Lennon, featuring Annie Leibovitz’s photograph of Lennon and Yoko Ono, taken hours before Lennon was killed. Rolling Stone Philippines reports that the American Society of Magazine Editors voted it the best magazine cover of the past four decades in 2005. That is a reported ASME honor, distinct from the German readers’ poll. Rolling Stone Philippines’ cover history
