Rolling Stone Australia ranked Sia second and Kylie Minogue third on its 50 Greatest Australian Artists of All Time list, with AC/DC in first place. The order is the magazine’s editorial judgment about Australian music—not an objective measure or proof of universal consensus.
Where Sia, Kylie Minogue and AC/DC rank
| Position | Artist |
|---|---|
| #1 | AC/DC |
| #2 | Sia |
| #3 | Kylie Minogue |
These placements come from Rolling Stone Australia’s 50-artist list. The publication presents the artists as contributors who helped put Australian music on the map at home and internationally, while acknowledging that judgments about musical greatness are contentious.
How Rolling Stone described the project
In its September 30, 2020 announcement, Rolling Stone Australia described the ranking as a countdown of 50 important, successful and respected names in Australian music. The magazine said artists, music lovers, media personalities and others helped with the project, and that testimonials from artists close to the featured musicians accompanied the entries.
Managing Editor Poppy Reid explained the peer-authored approach: “We have entrusted the tales of each artist in the list to singers, producers, multi-instrumentalists and songwriters who have lovingly penned essays to honour these stylistic trailblazers.”

The announcement promoted the ranking as a 200-page, double-length collector’s edition scheduled to arrive on December 7, 2020. That was the stated publication plan at the time; it does not establish whether copies are available now. Read the September 2020 announcement for the magazine’s description of the issue.
What the ranking does—and does not—tell readers
The list establishes Rolling Stone Australia’s order, not a universal verdict. The publication’s announcement describes contributors and peer-written tributes, but does not specify a scoring rubric, weighting system, electorate or vote totals for the artist ranking. Its positions should therefore be read as editorial choices rather than the result of a disclosed numerical formula.

Kylie Minogue’s separate album-list placement
Kylie Minogue’s Fever (2001) appears at #10 on Rolling Stone Australia’s separate 200 Greatest Australian Albums of All Time list, announced in 2021. That is an album ranking, not her #3 position on the 50-artist list.
Rolling Stone Australia described a more explicit process for that album list: nominations from over 800 industry figures, journalists, producers and artists informed an initial shortlist, followed by deliberations involving staff and music experts. The publication said its criteria covered cultural and critical impact. Those details apply to the album ranking and should not be treated as the methodology for the 2020 artist list. See the 2021 album-list announcement.
