In a 2022 interview, the Rogue One writer explained that he wanted a way to put the story in front of an audience without first relying on a studio to finance and release an expensive original film. His approach offers one creator’s strategy—not a guaranteed formula for getting original intellectual property made.
Why Whitta chose a novel and audio instead of a screenplay
Whitta told Germain Lussier of io9/Gizmodo that earlier in his career he would have developed Gundog as a speculative screenplay. By 2019–2020, he felt an expensive original science-fiction script from a writer without an established record would be difficult to place with studios. Writing a screenplay could mean spending months on a project that might circulate among decision-makers and then be shelved, without the story reaching an audience.
He instead developed the idea as a novel, then pursued an audio adaptation. The choice let the story reach readers and listeners in formats he could initiate, rather than making a studio feature the first step. Whitta described this as a way to retain more control over the work’s initial release and avoid asking a studio to fund the project before anyone could experience it.
He summed up the broader possibility in the interview: “You don’t have to ask for anyone’s money or permission to get a story in front of an audience.” That describes access to an initial release, not a promise that a self-published book or audio series will find a large audience or secure an adaptation.

What Gundog is—and how its audio reached listeners
Gundog is a science-fiction adventure set on an Earth conquered by alien machines. A young woman discovers a map that may hold the key to humanity’s liberation. The audio production featured Shannon Woodward, with music by Austin Wintory.
Whitta serialized the audio and made its rollout an audience event: episodes premiered at live Twitch listening sessions followed by discussion and Q&A, while the story was also released as a narrative podcast. A 2022 podcast listing documents the series, but platform availability and other release details may change; the reporting does not establish where every format can be accessed today.

How the routes compare in Whitta’s account
Whitta’s reasoning is best understood as a comparison of choices available for this particular project, not a universal business rule. The interview described the practical considerations below:
| Consideration | Studio screenplay first | Novel and audio first |
|---|---|---|
| Financing and production | A feature-film screenplay for original science fiction would still need a studio to commit to the costly production. Whitta worried that the script might not sell. | A novel and audio release offered ways to publish the story without first securing a studio’s financing for a feature. They still required work to create and distribute. |
| Initial release control | A studio’s decision would determine whether the screenplay proceeded toward a film. | Whitta could initiate the book and audio versions and shape their presentation to an audience. |
| Audience discovery | A script seeking studio backing would not, by itself, put the finished story in front of the public. | Readers and listeners could encounter the story through the novel, serialized audio, podcast distribution, and the live Twitch premieres Whitta described. |
| Production demands | A screenplay was a speculative first step toward a costly film production. | A book and an audio drama have their own creative and production requirements; the interview does not give comparable budgets or production figures. |
| Later adaptation | A studio screenplay is already written for screen, but writing it does not ensure that a film will be made. | A book or audio work might attract later screen interest if it finds an audience. Whitta’s experience does not establish that this outcome is likely or assured. |
Whitta’s examples—and the limits of the strategy
Whitta connected his thinking to comic creator Mark Millar’s ability to publish work in a medium he controlled before potential adaptations. He also pointed to his own earlier novel, Abomination, as an example of a story finding readers as a book and later attracting interest in screen rights. These were examples that informed his decision, not evidence that publishing first reliably leads to a screen deal.

Audience-building remained difficult in Whitta’s telling. He recalled advice from Andy Weir that earlier work and a small audience can provide “kindling” for later work, while acknowledging that breakout success is hard to predict. Publishing without a studio gatekeeper can make a first release possible; it cannot guarantee discovery, financial return, or adaptation.
At the time of the 2022 interview, Whitta estimated that paid Hollywood screenwriting accounted for 90% of his work. That was his personal estimate, not an industry statistic. His established screenwriting career also gave him a financial base from which to experiment with Gundog; the interview does not suggest every creator has the same cushion.

What “cracking the code” means in this case
Whitta’s experiment was not a secret route to a film deal. It was a decision about sequence: make the story available as a book and audio work, give people ways to encounter it, and leave open the possibility of adaptation later. He described the motivation this way: “These days, whether it be YouTube or Twitch or self-publishing on Kindle, whatever it may be, there are ways around the gatekeepers now.” The available account supports that as his view of creative access—not proof that bypassing traditional gatekeepers produces commercial success.
The original io9/Gizmodo interview was published on September 16, 2022. A Script Magazine interview from 2022 adds production context, and a podcast listing documents the audio series and a book-edition announcement. Those sources establish the project’s history at that time, not current stock, platform listings, or commercial terms.
