Rogue Agent is a feature-length dramatization inspired by the case of Robert Freegard, a conman who posed as an MI5 agent and persuaded people to go into hiding. It stars James Norton and Gemma Arterton. Despite its true-crime subject, it is a drama, not a documentary.
What is Rogue Agent about?
The film follows a con artist who claims to work for MI5 and uses that false identity to manipulate people. Its central story also follows a lawyer who falls for him and then tries to bring him down. Netflix’s synopsis describes the deception as lasting for years; Australian Classification says the film focuses on the psychological and emotional control of several women for financial gain.

Is Rogue Agent based on a true story?
Yes, though the wording varies by listing: Netflix calls it “based on a true story,” while Australian Classification describes it as “inspired by a true story.” Both identify Robert Freegard, who impersonated an MI5 agent, as the real person behind the premise. The film presents the case as a dramatic feature, not a documentary.
The available official descriptions establish the broad premise, but they do not provide a verified chronology of the real case or a scene-by-scene account of changes made for the film. It is therefore best understood as a dramatization rather than a definitive record of the case.
