Rock on the Richter Scale: The Best-Documented Concert Quakes

Seismic instruments can detect synchronized concert crowds, but Seattle and Los Angeles recordings are not a standardized global ranking—and they are not tectonic earthquakes.

Can a concert crowd make the ground shake? Yes: synchronized dancing, jumping and swaying can produce vibrations that nearby seismic instruments record. But those signals are not tectonic earthquakes, and the available reports do not support a definitive worldwide ranking. The most defensible comparison is a short list of notable documented cases—with clear limits on what each one measures.

What counts as a concert quake?

A “concert quake” is shorthand for ground motion generated by people and detected on a seismogram. It does not mean a fault moved or that an earthquake struck. Instruments can record human activity alongside natural seismic events; the U.S. Geological Survey explains how crowd activity such as a football celebration or dancing can appear in seismic records in its guide to recognizing a “Beast Quake” and a “Dance Quake”.

“Richter scale” is familiar shorthand in public coverage, but it can mislead here. The cases below involve reported seismic signals and comparisons of shaking or energy—not a set of standardized earthquake magnitudes measured on a shared scale. A ranking must therefore be read as a comparison of reported recordings, not a scientific global leaderboard.

Notable documented concert-generated seismic signals

Case What was recorded or reported What the comparison can establish
Taylor Swift, Lumen Field, Seattle, July 22–23, 2023 A nearby accelerometer recorded signals during two concerts. The 2024 study identifies low-frequency signals at 1–8 Hz and broadband energy at 30–80 Hz. It reports approximately 72,000 fans. The study says sustained energy from synchronized crowd motion exceeded the 2011 Beast Quake. It is a specific comparison, not a universal concert ranking.
Ed Sheeran with Macklemore, Lumen Field, Seattle, 2023 A KIRO 7 report published August 30, 2023 says Washington Emergency Management confirmed stronger seismic activity than at Swift’s Seattle show, with the strongest moment linked to Macklemore joining Sheeran for “Can’t Hold Us.” A reported comparison between Seattle events; it does not establish an all-time record across venues, years or sensor systems.
Taylor Swift, Los Angeles, 2023 A separate study reported song-related seismic signatures and assessed tremor strength. Researchers identified crowd movement as the best explanation for the harmonic tremor. Evidence that concert-related signals are not unique to Seattle. The Los Angeles findings should not be numerically combined with Seattle measurements as if they shared a method.

1. Taylor Swift’s Seattle shows and the Beast Quake

In a 2024 GSA Today paper, Jacqueline Caplan-Auerbach, Kyla Marczewski and Gavin S. Bullock analyzed recordings from Swift’s July 22 and 23, 2023 concerts at Lumen Field. A nearby accelerometer recorded the shows. The authors describe low-frequency signals from 1–8 Hz that tracked song tempos and were consistent with synchronized dancing, jumping and swaying. They also identify broadband energy from 30–80 Hz associated with full-band songs; the sound check showed little to no low-frequency energy.

  • Warm Tips: While these earplugs do not block all noise completely, they maintain music quality and keep the volume at a safer level. Not recommended for activities which need high noise reduction level like sleeping, hunting, or shooting

The paper’s abstract says, “The synchronized motion of 72,000 fans created sustained energy that exceeded the iconic ‘Beast Quake’ in 2011.” The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network likewise says that, in its direct comparison, the ground shook more during the Swift concert than during the Seahawks game. Those statements concern the particular recordings and comparisons described by the sources; they do not make a stadium concert and a football celebration interchangeable events.

Duration, crowd configuration, movement, sensor position and analysis method all affect what a recording shows. The GSA paper cautions that maximum-amplitude measurements do not yield a simple universal comparison. The practical takeaway is that the Swift shows produced a remarkable, documented crowd signal—not that they can be assigned a definitive place on a global earthquake-style scale. Read the GSA Today study and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network’s comparison for their respective methods and context.

2. Ed Sheeran and Macklemore in Seattle

For a local Seattle comparison, KIRO 7 reported on August 30, 2023, that Washington Emergency Management considered Sheeran’s Lumen Field show more seismically energetic than Swift’s Seattle concert. The report associated the strongest moment with Macklemore joining Sheeran for “Can’t Hold Us.” That makes the show a notable reported case, but the report does not provide a standardized cross-venue ranking or demonstrate that it was the strongest concert signal anywhere. See KIRO 7’s report for the local comparison.

3. Los Angeles shows the phenomenon is not Seattle-only

A separate Los Angeles study, covered by the Seismological Society of America in March 2024, found song-related seismic signatures and examined tremor strength. The researchers concluded that crowd movement was the best explanation for the harmonic tremor. This is useful corroborating evidence that human movement at a concert can register in seismic data in another city; it is not a direct numerical contest with Seattle. The Society’s summary is available at “What Kinds of Seismic Signals Did Swifties Send at LA Concert?”.

Why there is no reliable global concert-quake leaderboard

A fair ranking would need consistent measurements across events. The documented cases differ in venue layout, crowd size and synchronization, sensor type and distance, recording period, and analytical method. Some accounts emphasize sustained energy or tremor, while others describe the strongest moment. These are related observations, but they are not automatically comparable quantities.

To compare future reports responsibly, look for the following details:

  • Venue and date: identify the event and recording window.
  • Instrument and position: note whether the signal came from an accelerometer or another seismic instrument, and how far it was from the crowd.
  • Reported measure: distinguish peak amplitude from duration, frequency content, tremor strength or an earthquake-equivalent estimate.
  • Crowd conditions: consider reported attendance and whether people were moving in synchrony.
  • Method match: check whether the events being compared used the same instrument and analysis approach. If a report does not state a value or method, it cannot safely be inferred.

Without those controls, labels such as “loudest concert quake” may describe a local news comparison, not a scientific all-time record. For example, Seattle’s Swift-versus-Beast comparison and the reported Sheeran-versus-Swift comparison answer different questions and should not be collapsed into a single ranked scale.

What the “Richter scale” label gets wrong

Calling these events earthquakes can imply a damaging fault event that the cited concert studies do not report. The more accurate terms are “concert-generated seismic signal,” “crowd quake” or “earthquake-like shaking.” If a report uses an earthquake-magnitude equivalent to make the motion intuitive, treat it as an attributed comparison and ask what was compared; it does not turn crowd movement into a tectonic earthquake. The USGS overview of Beast Quakes and Dance Quakes provides useful context for interpreting human activity in seismic records.
