But calling the genre “dying out” goes further than the available evidence: recent reporting points to a loss of political visibility and fewer opportunities for large concerts, while no reliable long-term data establishes whether rock releases, audiences or active bands are shrinking overall.
How Bangladeshi rock became a vehicle for dissent
In the unsettled years after Bangladesh’s 1971 independence, a growing band culture gave musicians a way to respond to corruption, hardship and political life. The Daily Star’s 2017 account of the scene identifies Azam Khan—a freedom fighter and musician—and his band Uchcharon as foundational figures. Songs such as “Raillineer oi bostite” addressed hardship, while the band’s sound, appearance and performance style challenged expectations of what popular music could be.
That foundation widened into a scene. Feedback, Souls, Miles, Akhand Brothers, Feelings and Waves helped develop Bangladeshi band music; in the 1990s, rock and metal acts including Warfaze, Rock Strata, Winning and In Dhaka drew audiences in Dhaka. The period’s political writing was specific, not just a general mood of rebellion: Warfaze’s 1997 song “Jibondhara” criticized corrupt politicians, and Feedback’s 1994 album Bongabdo 1400 included songs about political institutions and everyday social problems. Maqsood O Dhaka’s protest work addressed democratic government and religious fundamentalism.
Political expression did not end with those early generations. The Daily Star also traces later artists, including Nemesis and Arbovirus, and reports a musician’s view that socio-political songs had become less numerous. That is a meaningful observation about perceived change, but it is not a count of releases across the scene.

Scholars have described Bangla rock as vernacular counterculture and dissident expression shaped by the region’s political and cultural history. Mubashar Hasan’s work on post-independence rock argues that its aesthetic helped young people question political and social issues. That interpretation helps explain the genre’s significance; it does not measure how much political change rock caused.
What does “dying out” mean?
The phrase can describe different changes, and evidence for one does not prove the others. The distinction matters: a genre can become less prominent in a political moment yet continue to produce music, or face a shortage of venues without losing listeners.

A 2018 essay by Mubashar Hasan argued that Bangladeshi rock was fading, citing political repression, competition from Bollywood music and hip-hop, weak protection of artists’ commercial rights, piracy and religious conservatism. These are the author’s explanations at that time, not a measurement of each factor’s importance now. The essay also reported industry-group estimates that 10% of music in Bangladesh was purchased legally and that piracy cost $180 million in annual earnings. Both figures are dated, concern the wider music market rather than rock specifically, and should not be used as evidence of rock’s decline.
Why rock was less visible during the July 2024 uprising
A December 2024 feature in The Business Standard revisited rock’s political role after the uprising. It noted the particular visibility of hip-hop tracks and performers during the protests, and that some local rock bands had played few large-scale shows in the preceding months. The musicians it interviewed did not agree on a single explanation.

- Different routes to a mass audience: Some interviewees felt hip-hop and influencers were more closely attuned to broad audiences. Musician Raef Al Hasan Rafa said, “Rock had its peak 20-odd years ago in Bangladesh. Back then it used to be the voice of anti-authority but the genre has slowly become normalised in our country.” That is his assessment of rock’s cultural position, not an audience measurement.
- Time and working conditions: Interviewees described rock production as potentially slower, while internet outages and curfews made collaboration harder during the upheaval.
- Safety and credibility: Some artists were cautious about personal safety. Others suggested that bands’ past participation in government-organised events may have affected how credible young listeners found them.
- Disagreement about retreat: BAMBA president and Miles founding member Hamin Ahmed rejected the simple idea that rock had withdrawn, saying some musicians joined the streets or supported the cause in other ways. He also cautioned, “However, in a country undergoing unsettling changes, musicians must be cautious about their actions and words. Their safety matters too.”
The reporting captures a political moment and the perceptions of people within the scene. It cannot by itself show whether rock’s audience or output has declined across Bangladesh over time.

Political visibility is not the only issue. In a January 29, 2026 report, The Business Standard described a downturn in large-scale concerts amid political uncertainty, safety concerns, venue reluctance, permission barriers, mob disruptions and shrinking sponsorship. Performers and organisers described those constraints; the report did not provide a nationwide concert time series or isolate rock from other live music.

The individual accounts illustrate the strain without serving as national statistics. Karnival co-founder and lead vocalist Tinu Rashid recalled that five to six shows per month had been normal for his band in 2023. That is one band leader’s recollection, not an average for Bangladeshi bands. He described the change this way: “Music still exists — but cautiously, quietly, and far less frequently than before.” Highway manager Ahmed Hasam Rabbi offered another perspective: “Due to political changes, elections, and movements, people have been mentally occupied with other things.” These are interviewees’ explanations of a difficult live-music climate, not proof that rock alone is affected.
Concerts depend on conditions beyond musicians’ control: permission to hold an event, a venue willing to host it, audiences able and willing to attend, and sponsors prepared to fund it. When those conditions deteriorate, a band may lose chances to perform even if it continues writing and recording. That distinction is central to judging what the concert downturn says—and does not say—about the genre.

What can be concluded about rock’s future?
The history makes the loss of political prominence a serious question: Bangladeshi rock once offered a recognizable language for challenging authority and describing social hardship. Recent accounts suggest that other forms, especially hip-hop during the July uprising, can occupy that political space, while practical barriers have made large shows harder to stage.
But “dying out” remains a contested diagnosis, not a demonstrated verdict. The reporting documents individual experiences, a politically consequential period and current concert pressures. It does not supply a reliable longitudinal count of Bangladeshi rock releases, audience share, active bands or genre-specific concerts. Until those measures exist, it is more accurate to say that rock’s public political profile and live opportunities face pressure than to claim that the music itself is disappearing.
