Robin Taylor Zander’s The Distance is his 2023 debut solo album—not a documented departure from Cheap Trick. The band announced the album as available on July 26, 2023, and his label describes him as a full-time Cheap Trick member.
Did Robin Taylor Zander leave Cheap Trick to make The Distance?
The available announcements and artist information do not say that Zander left Cheap Trick to make the record. Cheap Trick’s official archive presented The Distance as Zander’s new solo album on July 26, 2023: the band’s announcement. Confidential Records NYC likewise identifies it as his 2023 debut solo album and describes him as a full-time Cheap Trick member: Zander’s label artist page.

So “steps out” is misleading if it suggests an exit from the band. The evidence supports a solo release alongside his Cheap Trick role, not a departure connected to this album.
What does “steps away” refer to?
A June 5, 2025, Rock and Roll Globe article used “steps away” in connection with Zander releasing the later single Nobody’s Home. That wording concerns the single; it does not establish that he left Cheap Trick for The Distance: Rock and Roll Globe’s article on “Nobody’s Home”.

Later coverage also describes Zander touring with Cheap Trick and discusses his subsequent self-titled album, referring to The Distance as his 2023 debut. The two solo projects therefore belong to a broader pattern of solo work coexisting with reported band activity, rather than evidence of a split: American Songwriter’s interview, updated November 25, 2025.
Is The Distance a Cheap Trick album, and when did it come out?
No. It is Robin Taylor Zander’s solo album, not a Cheap Trick album. Cheap Trick’s official archive announced it as available on July 26, 2023, and Confidential Records NYC calls it his debut solo album from that year.
