Robert Downey Jr. won the Academy Award for Actor in a Supporting Role for *Oppenheimer* at the 96th Oscars on March 10, 2024. The win followed a career shaped by early Oscar recognition, serious setbacks, recovery and a widely noted return to major film roles. Friends and colleagues have also described the support he offered others along the way.

Why was Robert Downey Jr. up for an Oscar again?

Downey was nominated for playing Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s *Oppenheimer*. The Academy’s official record lists him as the 2024 winner for Actor in a Supporting Role: the 96th Academy Awards.

It was his third Oscar nomination overall, according to the Associated Press. His earlier nominations were for *Chaplin* and *Tropic Thunder*. At the ceremony, Downey thanked his wife, Susan, saying, “You loved me back to life and that’s why I’m here,” as AP reported.

What happened after his first Oscar nomination?

Downey’s first nomination came for *Chaplin* in 1993. The Associated Press reports that drug-related arrests and a year in prison followed. His later nomination for *Tropic Thunder* marked another moment of recognition, but it was *Oppenheimer* that brought his first Oscar win.

Looking back on missing out on the award for *Chaplin*, Downey said on *The View*, as reported by AP, “I was young and crazy.” He added that winning at that point “would have put me under the impression that I was on the right track.”

How did Robert Downey Jr. make his comeback?

Downey’s return was a gradual career story, not a single event. Vanity Fair describes his recovery and identifies *Iron Man* (2008) as a major milestone in his resurgence. The film placed him at the center of a successful franchise and helped re-establish him as a leading presence in Hollywood.

That career turning point should not be mistaken for a complete explanation of recovery. The available accounts describe an individual’s trajectory; they do not establish a general formula for overcoming addiction or rebuilding a career.

What have his friends said about his support?

In an April 2024 Esquire profile, Gwyneth Paltrow recalled turning to Downey for help supporting a friend experiencing addiction. “Robert will pick up the FaceTime while he’s in the bath and help me,” she said. It is Paltrow’s personal account of a friend’s support, rather than an independently documented history of that person’s experience.

The recollection offers a different angle on the comeback story: Paltrow describes Downey not only as someone who received support, but also as a friend willing to make time for someone else. His Oscar-night words about Susan likewise acknowledged the importance of support in his own life.
