Airyn De Niro spoke publicly about being a trans woman in an interview with Them published April 29, 2025. She discussed her transition, the tabloid attention that preceded the interview, and what it means to be visible without feeling truly seen. Robert De Niro expressed support after the interview.

What Airyn De Niro said in her interview

In an interview with Them contributor Ava Pauline Emilione, published April 29, 2025, Airyn spoke publicly about her transition for the first time. She said she began hormone therapy in November 2024; she did not provide further treatment details in the interview.

Airyn described seeing trans women speak openly and succeed in public as helping her feel that it was not too late to begin her own transition. She also spoke about the influence of Black women on her sense of identity: “I think a big part of [my transition] is also the influence Black women have had on me. I think stepping into this new identity, while also being more proud of my Blackness, makes me feel closer to them in some way.” That is her account of her experience, not a prescription for how anyone else should understand or approach transition.

Why she spoke after tabloid attention

The interview followed tabloid coverage after paparazzi photographed Airyn visiting her father in March 2025. She told Them that the outlets did not contact her before publishing and that she learned of one article about a week after it appeared. The attention brought visibility, but she said it did not give her control over when or how she would speak publicly.

“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen. I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet,” Airyn told Them. The distinction is central to her account: unwanted public exposure is not the same as being able to describe oneself in one’s own words.

What Robert De Niro said about Airyn

After the interview, Robert De Niro publicly expressed support. Them quoted him as saying: “I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is… I love all my children.”

The Guardian reported a fuller version of his statement: “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is … I love all my children.” The quotations differ by outlet; each is reproduced here in the wording that outlet reported.

She is also pursuing modeling and voice acting, and studying to become a mental health counselor, according to the interview. Those ambitions are part of the portrait she shared—not a reason to reduce her identity or her account of privacy and visibility to a celebrity-family story.
