He was 92. His son, John Benton, told the Associated Press that the cause was natural causes.
What Robert Benton was known for
Benton’s career moved from magazine art direction to some of the defining American films of his era. He began as an art director at Esquire and co-wrote the screenplay for Bonnie and Clyde (1967) with fellow editor David Newman. Directed by Arthur Penn, the film overcame early critical resistance and became a touchstone of 1960s culture, the Associated Press reported.
Benton made his transition to writer-director with Bad Company (1972), according to the Directors Guild of America (DGA). He also worked on The Late Show (1977), before reaching his greatest critical and box-office success with Kramer vs. Kramer (1979).
How Kramer vs. Kramer shaped his legacy
Adapted from Avery Corman’s novel, Kramer vs. Kramer made Benton a major awards figure. The film received nine Academy Award nominations and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Benton won the directing and adapted-screenplay Oscars; Dustin Hoffman won Best Actor, and Meryl Streep won Best Supporting Actress, according to the DGA Visual History.

Benton earned three personal Academy Awards: writing and directing Kramer vs. Kramer, and writing Places in the Heart (1984), the Associated Press reported. Accounts differ on his total personal Oscar nominations, so a single overall number should be treated cautiously: AP says six, while The Washington Post says seven. The DGA describes four additional nominations beyond his three wins without reconciling that discrepancy.
Films Benton directed after his breakthrough
Benton continued directing across several decades. His films included Still of the Night (1982), Places in the Heart (1984), Billy Bathgate (1991), Nobody’s Fool (1994), The Human Stain (2003) and Feast of Love (2007). The DGA and AP identify Feast of Love as his last film as a director.
