What the financial figures actually measure
“Billion-dollar brand” is often used loosely. A company valuation, sales, revenue, money raised in a funding round and an owner’s personal net worth are different measures. The available figures have dates and sources; they do not amount to comparable current financial statements for both businesses.
- Fenty Beauty sales: TIME reported more than $500 million in Fenty Beauty gross sales in 2018. That is a historical sales figure, not a current valuation or current annual revenue. TIME’s 2019 report also quoted LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault praising Rihanna as “a true entrepreneur, a real CEO and a terrific leader.”
- Revenue growth: Forbes’ profile excerpt and Guinness World Records say Fenty Beauty doubled its revenue in 2022. The claim is specific to that year; neither source establishes current revenue. Forbes’ profile is the source for the reported growth and other dated company details.
- Savage X Fenty funding: Forbes’ profile excerpt says the company raised $125 million in a funding round in January 2022. Funding raised is not the same as company valuation.
- Rihanna’s personal net worth: Guinness World Records said her fortune was $1.4 billion on April 4, 2023, citing Forbes’ 2023 World’s Billionaires List, and said most of it came from Fenty Beauty. That is an estimate of Rihanna’s personal wealth, not a valuation of either company. Guinness also says Fenty Beauty doubled its revenue in 2022. Why the “first Black woman” wording needs qualification
A superlative such as “first Black woman to build two billion-dollar brands” depends on how “build,” “brand” and “billion-dollar” are defined, as well as which people and businesses are included in the comparison. The cited sources identify Rihanna’s companies and report historical financial estimates, but do not provide a documented comparison establishing the “first” claim. It is more accurate to frame that wording as a reported headline claim than as a verified record.

What is established—and what is not
The evidence supports describing Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty as distinct, high-profile businesses with historical billion-dollar estimates associated with them. It does not establish both companies’ current valuations as of October 2026. Private-company valuations and ownership estimates can change, and the dated reporting above should not be read as a current audit or financial update.
The companies’ official pages help clarify their identities and products. Fenty Beauty’s FAQ identifies Rihanna as founder, CEO and owner of its brands, describes the joint ventures with Kendo Brands, and names Sephora and Ulta as official retailers. The FAQ says those official retailer channels are the way to guarantee authenticity. Savage X Fenty’s official about page describes its product range and Rihanna’s approach to the brand: “Savage X means making your own rules and expressing your mood, character and style for you—not for someone else.”
